have 1968 16' center con. Looking for 4 stroke repower. Any experience or comments with 80 Yamaha or 70 merc on performance or ride would be appreciated. Other suggestions for repower would also be appreciated. thanks in advace.

I have a 1999 Montauk powered with a Mercury 50hp 4 stroke. Runs in the mid 30s, on plane in a jiffy and handles great. Very easy on fuel also. Probably couldn't ski with it but I'm to old for that anyway.

For what it is worth, I am repowering my 69 Nauset and am going with another 90 Yamaha 2 stroke. Plenty of threads on this site about repowering, but from I could tell, the 90 Yamaha is a good balance of power vs weight etc. and is a popular choice amongst this learned crowd. The 4 strokes tend be be heavier ( and cleaner and quieter ) and some people have commented that this does impact ride/handling. Extra cost and unknown effect of the extra weight steered me to the 90...
