Thinking of buying this ex-police boat looks like a Montauk but grey no bow rail does have small side rails about 3ft long on either side it has a three year old Evinrude 50hp on it motor is in great shape the rest of the boat is fair has a small center console made of aluminum and a full width bench seat and a aluminum deck that covers the entire area behind the seat al the way to the stern, under the deck is a large gas tank, batteries w/chager also has a eight foot high aluminum pole in the middle of deck for police lights.
If I buy this boat I plan on using it offshore in San Diego area so the rear deck, bench seat must go maybe add a leaning post instead. I plan on keeping the 50hp motor on for awhile what can I expect in the way of performance? any drawbacks to this model other than the rear deck and bench seat?
I should add that I am not planning on restoring this boat to showroom cond. I will be using it hard.

thanks for any advice'

Hi, Otto.

Lots of members will disagree with me, but 50hp will give you adequate performance and save you some bux on fuel.

For at least 10 years, BW recommended 55 Homelites and Bearcats for the 16s. That was in the days that they were rated at the crank. Figure they were about 45 at the prop.

They would do about 30 at WOT and cruise at 25.

I just sold an 88 model LES with a 115 on the back of it. I am regreting it already! That is one fine hull and could easily be made into a world class fishing rig, I was planning to remove the rear aluminum deck and add seats ect. I really like the console design too.
Don't know what your performance with the 50 will be. I would guess low 30'top end. According to Chuck Bennett at Whaler the LES is 200 lbs or more heavier than the Montauk due to extra glass and reinforcement in hull.
Enjoy it!

FYI, I just posted a pic of the LES on the other web site.

you mentioned that you posted a picture of your 88 LES on the other website could you post the url please. Sounds like the same model, did yours have a aluminum console too? the one I plan to buy has the console really far forward I guess since all the rear space is wasted with cover. If yours had the aluminum fuel tank that went right behind the seat that goes all the way across the boat do have any idea how many gallons it is? I like the size of the tank but I probably will have to get rid of it when I put a leaning post and bait tank in unless I
keep some sort of bench seat.

thanks to all who responded

Up Monterey Bay area, you can tell the old timey guys cause they ran mahogany consoled 16footers with 50hp engine. 95% of the time the 50 is capable of going faster than you want to due to sea conditions. On those rare days when the ocean is waterski flat; then is when you wish for a 100horses....Dave
P.S. find another..hang twins!

I've got a 17' montauk with a 50HP Honda on it. Top speed with a couple people in the boat and the bimini top up is right about 30mph according to the GPS. The motor is at redline at 30mph. The Honda has plenty of torque that it yanks a wake board out of the water with 4 people sitll in the boat with no problem at all, plus we can wakeboard all day on 6 gallons of gas. I haven't tried with 6 people yet (1 on wakeboard 5 in boat), probably over the weight limit with 6 anyway. Not breaking any speed records, but plenty of HP to get around and have a little fun. :)

It's the same hull, I think the tank is 18 gals, yes aluminum console forward, nice stainless hand rail thingy on console. Really nice plumbing under deck with water seperator ect. Mine also had a 'beach bumper on keel' these were custom one off boats and are great. GET THE BOAT! WORRY ABOUT POWER LATER.

My first Whaler was a 16ft Currituck E/W an Evinrude 50 HP which proved to be a perfect combo for me and my family for 14 yrs. It would run about 30 mph flat out, timed speed as I had neither tach. or speedo. When my family grew and I carried more weight I simply changed props to keep a decent hole shot.
I replaced that boat with a 1976 Bass Boat E/W an Evinrude 85hp and was pleased with the performance, excluding fuel consumption,
until I repowered with an Evinrude Ficht 90 hp. WOW, right after breakin I clocked 51 mph on the speedo, later checked with GPS and found the speed to be 42 mph . My Bass Boat is heavy, it's based on the Newport with fore and aft decks, trolling motor, 3 series 27 batteries, 18 gal. of fuel,a 9.9 hp kicker on a bracket and fishing tackle that fills all of the available enclosed space and still runs 42mph at 7.5 mpg.
