I just started running my new 2001 Merc 2 stroke on my 1988 Newtauk. I believe the prop is a alum. 13 3/4 x 21 Merc OEM. I have the motor mounted all the ways down on the transom. Top hole #1 ?. At any rate I have six hours on the motor and have been trying to test the motor a bit. I have been in the ocean off of Gloucester MA in a bit of chop most of the time. I do not have a GPS or any other speed tracking device. At 2/3 throttle the rps read 4200. At 4500 rpm the stern felt like it was sliding or wiggling back and forth. Needless to say I slowed down. I have the motor trimmed slightly up. I do not need or expect to go WOT in the ocean but would like to be running the motor at its most efficient level at all speeds.

Do I need to raise the motor up a hole? I had a StingRay fin on my old Johnson 88hp and would prefer not to put one on. The Merc Mechanic set the motor on the top hole and selected the prop. They are a shop I want to do business with as they are the Marina that my boat is at. They are fair and honest so I want to be as diplomatic as I can be if adjustments are in order.

I have never used T/T before so I may not be using the levels for the motor.

Any input would help

I must type better. Should read "RPM's" and "Trim Levels" not levels. Sorry folks
