I have a 1989 18' Outrage with twin 70hp Johnsons and I am repowering with a single Yamaha 150 4 stroke.

I am concerned that the 8 mounting holes from the twin setup will weaken the transom in a single setup. One mechanic told me a aluminum plate mounted over the transom would add strength. I do not think just glassing in the holes would be enough.

The weight of the single yamaha is 15lbs more than the twin Johnsons.

I need as many opinions as possible to avoid a costly mistake.

Thank You.

The old holes will not weaken the transom. Plug them with epoxy filler and gelcoat. For a quick but ugly fix, plug the holes with through bolts and Lifecaulk, or 3M 4200.

The real costly mistake is buying the 4 stroke. You'll get comparable economy, and better performance with a direct injected 2 stroke, and they're less expensive to purchase.
