Would it make sense to keep a battery charged with a solar charger?

Is there any harm in keeping a solar charger on it? My concern is that re-chargeable batteries have a certain number of charges in them before they won't take any more charge. If you keep a solar charger on a battery, does it eventually do more harm than good?

Solar charging is an excellent way to keep a battery charged.

Damage to the battery will only occur if the panel over charges the battery. Therefore you should use the correct size panel for the battery you will be charging and also use a charge controller. The controller will stop the charge once the battery is full. Some solar panels have a built in circut to prevent over charging but a controller is generally considered a more reliable failsafe.
