GARMIN GMI 10 NMEA-2000 Color Display

Garmin GMI 10 NMEA-2000 Display

GARMIN has joined other NMEA-2000 instrument producers and is now offering a network instrument display, the GMI 10. This 320 x 240 pixel color display device can be connected to a NMEA-2000 network on a vessel, and it will display data from connected sensors in the following categories:

--speed, including current, average, and maximum
--trip log, master log
--bearing to waypoint
--distance to waypoint

This data would be supplied by a GPS sensor and by a chart plotter device.

This data would be supplied by a SONAR sensor.

--barometric pressure
--air temperature
--wind speed
--wind direction

This data would be supplied by atmospheric and wind sensors.

--tank levels for multiple tanks
--fuel flow rate
--vessel fuel economy
--vessel range

This data would be supplied by a fuel flow sensor and tank level sensor. The economy and range calculations also require speed information be available.

--battery voltage
--fuel flow rate
--oil pressure

This data would be supplied by an engine sensor.

--bus voltage

The GMI 10 appears to be a very attractive and nicely styled color display. The software included provides for the creation of custom display pages to show data available on the network in a variety of presentations. There is a great deal of flexibility in configuration for choice of units, configuration of front panel soft keys, sequence of screens, and many other options.

The GMI 10 is also configurable to provide an alarm (aural and visual) when certain data values exceed preset bounds. The alarms include:

--lost connection to other devices
--water depth, both deep and shallow
--water temperature zone
--GPS satellite status
--system calibration needed

To enhance the utility of the GMI 10 display, the unit also includes a connection for receiving data from one attached NMEA-0183 device. The GMI 10 cannot transmit any data to an NMEA-0183 device.

The device is rated as IPX-7 waterproof.

The retail price of the Garmin GMI 10 Marine Instrument Display is $535.70, and the device is expected to be available in the Spring of 2008.

Right now, the "street price" for the GMI 10 display at one non-national marine parts supplier is $428.99.
