The USA's NAVSTAR Global Positioning System or GPS is now 40-years old. And there are now three other operational global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) that have joined GPS:

--GLONASS, a system operated by Russia

--GALILEO, a system operated by a European consortium, and

--BeiDou or BDS, a system operated by China

GNSS expert Richard Langley and others give a short summary of the history of GNSS systems in an excellent article from GPS WORLD magazine. See

The current generation of marine devices with GNSS receivers seem to be capable of using GPS and GLONASS.
