I would like to plan a whaler trip on the St.John's this summer, preferably accompanied by a fellow Whaler enthusiast who knows the area. Anyone interested?

Also, I would like some input on a good launching point around Jacksonville, especially one near SECURE parking for my trailer and tow vehicle. I know "secure" is a relative term, but there are usually good areas available if you know where to go.

C'mon guys! Surely there's someone out there who knows something about the St.John's.

Compounder: I lived on the St. Johns for a while back in 97, but never got on the river. This was up by Palatka (Putnam county), about an hours drive south of Jax. The river there is so incredibly beautiful. I have a good friend in Jax that has a Montauk, and might just be interested in some sort of venture. My boating on the St. Johns has mostly been south of Sanford, and about 25 years ago. I have also done some boating around the ocala forest area, Silver Glenn Springs, Alexander Springs, and Lake George.
I have been planning to go over and take some friends and family on the river this summer. My dad lives in the Deland area.
What did you have in mind?

Eric, I was just hoping I could hook up with a fellow Whaler enthusiast or two who have "local knowledge" and do a 2-3 day trip.

I'll bring it up with my friend in Jacksonville, he's been up and down the river and may be just the person we need (and he has a montauk). It'd be good to get some more people interested, though. Trips like the north channel trip from last year sounded really fun. Eric

Compounder, Clark Roberts says there is a Holiday Inn in Palatka with a dock and ramp. I called and verified this and checked rates.I had thought of staging out of there for a couple of 1 day forays. I know it is possible to go from the St. Johns to the Mt Dora area via water. I am also interested in the area around Crystal Springs, since I am in middle GA the logistics may be hard to handle.
Thanks Jim Armstrong

I talked to my friend in Jacksonville. He said the ramp at Green Cove Springs would be a good place to start a trip. He thinks the car would likely to be safe there, and that the river up by Jacksonville isn't that nice anyway. It's about 2 miles wide there. He did mention the Holiday Inn in Palatka. Just south of Palatka is Lake George, which has Silver Glenn Springs, with cabins and camp sites available. This would be a whole lot better place to base than Palatka. I lived in that county (Putnam) in 97, couldn't get away fast enough! Quit my job and moved after 5 months. The river's really beautiful there, however.
My friend suggested a cruising guide, I think that's a publication with the info we all are seeking.
It sounds like there could be enough people interested to put a trip together. Let's keep this topic alive.

I read the account of the cruise on the St. Johns. Interesting; it sure reminded me why I didn't stay in Putnam county (Palatka)long. I've got to admit that it didn't make me too interested in seeing that part of the state again. Let's keep considering it though.
