We're meeting my inlaws again this year on the island between Bogue and Beaufort inlets (I can't remember the name). Last year we boated in each inlet and went to Cape Lookout one day. I bought condensed charts for each inlet area from a local marina - that was the first time I'd needed to use a chart having been a river/lake boater until then - we wore some paint off the prop until I got them.

This year we're looking to expand our range, possibly looping the island (ICW and ocean) or going past the inlet areas. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to some appropriate maps/charts for the area.

We're only in a 15 Striper, so space is a premium - the laminated charts of the inlets have been great.

I bought the "GMCO's Waterproof Chartbook of North Carolina" when we were on the Outer Banks in April. It seemed like every tackle shop and/or Marina had them. All the charts of the entire coastline with recreation features in a very handy spiral bound format and bulletproof waterproof paper. Very nice in an open cockpit boat with limited console space.$34.95 everywhere.

russellbailey - Harkers Island?

I picked up a laminated chart to augment my East Coast ICW Chartbook and Garmin GPS G-Chart when I was down there this Spring (it's right in front of me).

I don't know if it will cover everything you want or not, but I kept the boat in a very inexpensive slip on Atlantic Beach just East of the causeway facing Morehead City, and that little laminated chart was really helpful to me.

Nautical Publications Chart #A.C.003 has Beaufort Inlet/Harker's Island/Back Sound/Cape Lookout on one side and has Newport River And North River Marshes as well as Lookout Bight on the reverse side.

As I think about it, Bogue Inlet is to the West of Beaufort Inlet, isn't it? Maybe the island you are trying to think of is Atlantic Beach/Emerald Island?

Anyway, hope this helps-

Emerald Island is the place, only a couple of miles east of the western end is where we stay.

Thanks for the tips on the chartbooks. I'll check them both out.

The GMCO book is great. I ordered it from Online Marine and it came yesterday. Thanks for the suggestion.
