OK folks the planning committee has our plan for the First Annual(?) East Tennessee Rendezvous on Sept. 11. 2004 on Tellico Lake and it is time to begin the sign-in for those planning to attend. The schedule is as follows:

10AM Meet and launch at Lenoir City Park* near Ft. Loudoun Dam. Specific directions to the park will be provided later. We have a pavilion reserved there for our all day use.

11AM Depart on 20 mile cruise to Ft. Loudoun State Historic Area* and Sequoyah Birthplace Museum*. There are always Musket Drills, Changing of the Guard ,etc
every weekend at the fort stockade but that particular weekend is also the 18th Century Trade Faire with 18th century vendors and special activities. Also at the nearby Sequoyah Birthplace Museum there will be Indian dances, music, food and beautiful Native American and Appalachian hand-made crafts and products. For specific details see and

The Ft. Loudoun State Park also includes a small beach and picnic areas for lunch snacks. The area should be quite busy with auto traffic but we hope to be able to raft up and visit. Be sure to bring light lunch items, boat fenders for rafting, wading/beach shoes and sunscreen. Unlike sandy Florida, Tennessee shorelines tend to be wooded and/or rocky; small swimming beaches at the parks do have some sand.

~3PM Depart for return cruise.

~4PM Arrive either at Bennett home/dock or Lenoir Park Pavilion for party/picnic/social. Grills and Bluegrass band will be at either site. Specific site depends on number of attendees and their choice. Docking space is limited at either site. Everyone attending is expected to bring own meat to grill, beverages of choice, and one side dish to share. In addition to enjoying the music, food and camaraderie we would hope at this time to have some awards and talk about next year’s rendezvous

?PM Return home or to local lodgings

*Note:**** None of the parks permit alcoholic beverages ****

Now, as for the sign-in please provide the following on this website;
1. Your name
2. Home location
3. Number of adults including self
4. Number of children
5. Year and model of Whaler(s)

For those out-of-towners(out-of-staters) who plan to overnight Friday or Saturday please let us know what type of accommodations you desire, i.e. motel, campground, RV, etc. and one of committee will provide info for you. We think this has the makings for a great time for all. Hope you can join us!!!

Is there a campground or hotel that is close by and on the water so that we could go to it by water at the end of the day without having to put the boat on the trailer?

David: There are two campgrounds in the area:

1. Yarbery Campground - Ft. Loudon Lake
2. Laurderdale Cove Campground - Tellico

Both places have a launch and with Laurderdale cove being the best to leave boat in water overnight.

I'll look up the numbers tomorrow.

Jim Bennett posted 07-07-2004 03:55 PM ET (US)     Profile for Jim Bennett  Send Email to Jim Bennett

Thanks for providing the info on campgrounds. However, believe it is Lotterdale Cove, not Laurderdale Cove; I think you and family have been spending too much time in Florida (Lauterdale?) HA!! Anyhow, all will appreciate you providing numbers.

Meanwhile, thought would let all know that there are several motels in Lenoir City on TN321 just off of I-75 at exit 81. There are around half dozen grouped close together including

Comfort Inn 1-800-424-6423 or 865-988-8880
Days Inn 865-986-2011
EconoLodge 865-986-0295
Ramada Limited 865-986-9000

The launch ramp/meeting point at Lenoir City Park is about 5 - 6 miles from any of these.

I couldn't located the number to Yarbery (I'm sure I'm spelling it wrong also) Maybe it is Yankeetown...oooppsss...thinking of Florida again. Anyway, hopefully one of these will work out for you.

As of today, July 20, we have 11 vessels and 25 -30 people signed up. There are, however, several locals, some other Tennesseans, some Floridians and possibly some Carolina folk who have yet to check in. The "committee" is having another planning meeting "on the water" on August 1 to evaluate things and make any plan adjustments.

Jim, can we have a 'captain's meeting' on friday evening?
Maybe go over water safety, water directions, etc. Is there somewhere where we can all eat lunch or should we pack sandwiches in the boat?
We plan to be in town on friday afternoon.

The 4 in Janis' post includes me and my long as her back is OK. Being the 1 year anniversary of her injury it should be fine. Will know more after next week when we drive 1200 miles to NJ.

Might have a few more coming too...if fno makes up his mind and decides to caravan up with us. Anything special I need to bring to conform to resevoir or freshwater boating? Anotherwords if my boat is legal in saltwater, am I legal up there...less of course the 4 bales of pot I usually transport ;)

Janis, There is a place of the water (Tellico Harbor) that you can eat lunch....Hamburgers, sandwiches, hoogies and a few plate lunches for aroud $6 -$10 range. I'll double check with them to see what their hours are for Sept.

Big, You should be good to go....heck...this is Tenn...even the 4 bales are legal! This should be approx. a 40 mile round trip.

Hope you guys enjoy your trip to TN.

Good to see that the Florida "Gang of Four" (or more) will be joining us. Big, with four in your boat and that hi-tech 4S Suzuki you shouldn't have any trouble with 40 mile trip; that's only 6.5 to 13 mpg you gotta do! Looks like good chance we'll have over 20 Whalers. Three members of committee haven't signed in yet and that is at least 3 - 5 more boats. We also have representation from KY and MS.

In earlier thread we had interest expressed in attending by following forum members but no further response:

russellbailey - GA

Big, you can bring along your "bales" - just don't smoke'em or try to sell'em at my place!! Janis, bc is correct about Tellico Harbor Marina being near to our 20 mile cruise destination point where Big can fill up his 6 or 3 gal tank, but believe their small cafe closes for season on Labor Day, so suggest you bring sandwiches, etc for lunch. Will get back with more info after our meeting this Sunday

The following is update from committee meeting last Sunday Aug 1.

We learned that Tellico Village Cruising Club would be meeting and rafting with the Ft. Loudoun “Navy” on the same day as us. The head of the cruising club said they do it every year for the Ft. Loudoun Trade Faire event and usually have 20 or so cruisers, pontoons, bowriders of 23 ft or longer; he said they rarely go ashore, just party and swim off their “circle raft” and watch events on shore. Told him of our plans and that we would probably have around 20 boats, most under 20ft., and would raft off separately. We may find, depending on boat traffic and other conditions, that merely cruising by the activities would be our simplest approach and then raft off farther away in quieter area. Some may want to swim off boats; some with children may want to swim at Toqua beach which is nearby and quite nice, but again not readily accessible by “several” boats.

We found that nearby Tellico Harbor Marina restaurant will probably be open later than Labor Day this year. This could be good stopover for lunch, gas, toilet etc. and just another cruise waypoint. Only concern I have with lunching there is that menu would probably be quite similar to what everyone would have later at Lenoir City Park picnic - like burgers, dogs, brats. So, your choice if want to bring own sandwiches, etc.

Unfortunately we have had to defer the band for financial and logistical reasons; perhaps, at our next year rendezvous we can try it. We can have CD Bluegrass background music at the park picnic and anyone should feel free to bring own banjo, guitar, harmonica, or whatever!

Last but not least, we are thinking of making reservations at Calhoun’s Restaurant by Ft. Loudoun Marina on Friday evening Sept 10 particularly for, but not restricted to, those coming from out of town. My wife and I and some of committee members would plan to join them and any others would be welcome. Instead of cluttering this thread with responses, “please send direct e-mail to me” letting me know whether you will arrive early enough on Friday for dinner at say 6:30-7PM. I will be away from my computer from Aug 10 to Aug 20 and by then we should have good count as to number of out-of-towners being here for that evening.

If you have been following this thread you are aware that we now have Whalers coming from TN, MS, KY, FL, NC and OH. I know there are still more TN Whalers to sign-up.

Sorry to hear about all the troubles down FL way. Followed Janis' thread in Genaeral forum. Was worried you folks farther south would have some problems.

Wed and Thurs before Charley, I and several of wife's Florida family were with me around 10,000 ft high in Yosemite National Park. Of course we had no Weather Channel and all we knew was Tampa area was to take direct hit where all were from with more of family still there. When we returned to San Fran on Fri 13th we were relievd by the course change but sorry for those who got hit. Saw the Weather Channel people interviewing at N. Reddington Beach which is less than 10 miles from my FL townhouse - amazing to see no rain and just gentle waves lapping the beach. While in Yosemite, the predicted storm surge of 15 - 18 ft gave me visions of my cruiser being swept off lift and fishing boat in ground level garage being crashed into ceiling (first floor of townhouse).

Wish all you FL folks and families and friends the best in recovering from Charley. Still will keep fingers crossed that you still make it to TN rendezvous.

Hope things work out that you guys/gals can come Bigshot but sounds like you have a whole lot more important things to be taking care of down there. I guess there are times where it pays to be landlocked!

Looks like our plans are about finalized. I'm going to leave the family at home and come up with a buddy. We'll probably check in at a campground in the a.m. and set up a tent on the 11th and then try and meet up with everyone midway through your cruise. You shouldn't be too hard to find. Somebody keep a radio on 16 and I'll try and contact you when we get in the water.

We are going to plan to stay at Lotterdale Cove Campground the night of the 11th. I just called them, (865-856-3832) and asked about up to 5 campsites and they said that there would be plenty available but to call back after the holidays and check again... They usually don't take reservations but might reserve a tent area if we had a big enough group.

Since I don't know how many of you are camping, I'm not sure if we even need to worry about reserving anything. I am going to call again before heading up just to be sure there is room for us. They said the campground was about 9 miles northeast of the dam but according to my map - they are southeast. If anyone wants to check further, might be prudent.

Approximate coordinates of where I think the site is are:

Landlocked et al,

With several possibly interested in camping I thought would take closer look by boat yesterday afternoon at Lotterdale Campground. Have boated by there several times but never looked closely - only about 3 miles south of my home on west side of Tellico Lake. It appears to be a very nice campground in a large protected cove and can confirm much of info you provided.; bathouse, small beach, ramp, etc. Currently, most of waterfront sites are taken by large RV’s & trailers and several pontoons tied to shore. You also were correct about mid-cruise location of campsite. Campground is 10 winding miles by water due south (not SE) of dams and destination point of Ft. Loudoun State Park is another 10 winding miles south of campground. Our meeting/launch point as mentioned previously is at Lenoir City Park about 1 mile north of dams which is also where we will end up for picnic.

Today, I called the campground and started asking questions about availability of sites, etc. and lady said someone else had called earlier about the same thing. Must have been you Chris. She said should be no problem for sites because it’s after holiday and likely that some folks will be leaving. Said they don’t normally make reservations but will try to make provision for those who come from out of town and call a few days ahead. Believe usual rate is $19/night for 2 people but might be negotiable depending on number of sites needed.

The directions for reaching the campground are a little sketchy but basically correct for those coming in from south. South(east)bound Highway 72 joins Highway 411 just west of small town of Vonore and then both go east together through Vonore. About 5 miles east of the previous junction, 72 splits off again going south; just before that junction E. Tellico Parkway (or Baker Creek Road) goes north to campground. For those arriving from north side of lake via Interstates 40/75 there could be a different route to follow. When time gets closer perhaps those who need further direction should send me direct e-mail and we can exchange phone numbers and discuss more details.

Chris, sorry you and friend will not be joining us for dinner on Fri eve Aug 10. My party of 5 and 3 from FL/IN are only ones I am counting on as of now. Expect some others may join and plan on making reservations over this weekend for 12. Whomever else is wanting to join in please let me know ASAP.

We'll see you all on Saturday. If anyone is interested in hanging out around the campfire after the official festivities are over, I'm sure we can find you a log. Also, Planning on doing some fishing early on Sunday Morning should anyone care to partake.

That campground sounds good so far. If we can confirm attendance, we will reserve the area for late arrivals. Mid way is cool, this way we will have a nice ride after the festivities. Count us in for fishing Sunday Morning. (We will scope the good sites out before you get there!) This trip is going to be great!

You are right....there is another way into the Lotterdale Cove campground via highway 321. It will take you straight to the campground without any back-tracking. It is a back-road route but will save a lot of time comming back from Calhouns. I can post a little now but will have to finish after looking over a county map. After leaving the Calhouns, take a right onto hwy. 321 towards Maryville (crosses the dam). You will come to a construction zone. Look for (I'm pretty sure is 95) to the right. Sign may say Greenback. Heres where it gets tricky. It might be better is I scan a map and forward to Jim then he can pass to who ever needs it. Or you can try map quest with the address of the campground from Lenior City.

Take care,

bc, map quest does do a good job of routing you to the campground. It does come off of 321 to 95.

How many sites do we need so far? 1 for us, 1 for landlocked? +?? I sent an email to the campground, but no response yet, asking about mooring and ramps. Hopefully, we can camp near the boats.

Farmer Dave,

Glad you were able to use Mapquest and find way to Lotterdale coming from north. According to my map and observation , there is a launch ramp in the campground itself and another public ramp on other side of same cove. Appear to be no docks for keeping boats and expect you'll have to tie to shore at campground and anchor off. Small sandy beach is for swimming only. Campground cove is well protected from main channel of lake and believe is actually a no-wake zone (not many of those on lake). There are campsites right by water but all seem currently occupied. I believe David Jenkins may be interested in camping; have you or Chris been in touch with him?

Anyone wanting to get in touch with me direct re: camping, email me at work - I've got spam blocker here at home that makes emailing a hassle.

I should be in all day on Monday - after that I have a fair amount of field time scheduled next week. I hesitate to post my home # here but post a message if you need to get in touch with me and I'll email it to you.

My wife is having seconds thoughts about the trip. She is concerned about the drive to Tennessee from Durham, NC. As a compromise, I may trailer the boat and she may fly to Knoxville on Friday afternoon. Is anyone going to be coming to the campsite from Knoxville? Any idea how long of a drive that is?
Jim Bennett posted 08-29-2004 10:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for Jim Bennett  Send Email to Jim Bennett

Knoxville Airport (Tyson-McGee) is actually closer to Maryville than Knoxville and my guesstimate is its 25-35 min from campground. My home is farther from airport than campground and I can usually make it in less than 30 min.

bc posted 08-29-2004 10:39 PM ET (US)     Profile for bc

The Knoxville airport is actually in Alcoa which is approx. 15 - 20 minutes from Lotterdale campground. You'll be passing by the Airport on your way. Airport is on Alcoa Hwy. (129) Take Hwy. 129 to hwy. 411 south towards Atlanta, you will see Hwy 72 on the right....this will take you to the campground.

Take care,

Sorry Jim....I didn't see that you are on-line.....Your 25 min. is probably closer than my 15.

Figured you would eventually respond to David J's question aboput airport. Glad you will be coming with Eric. Haven't heard from Tom, Don or Terry but assume they will be at rendezvous which means 3 more boats. Looks like the "campers" are planning on some fishing on Sunday. May just plan to join them.

Actually less than 2 weeks now. When you e-mail Eric, check if he is planning to make dinner Fri eve.

Originally I had high asperations of having the Montauk completely restored before the rendevous. Now, I'm just hoping I can get it back together and operable. The wood won't be perfect - going to stop the varnish job where I'm at. Waxing may have to wait. And, the trailer definately isn't going to get painted. I've decided the most important thing is just to show up.

So, nobody laugh at my trailer. And, nobody look too closely at the wood.

Ok, I'm back from Bristol, and have camped for 4 days, and am not unpacking the gear since we are only a 10 days out.
Land, love the idea of beverages in the cooler for the fishing on sunday.
Bubba, need a tank for the old coleman stove of mom and daddy's, it bit the dust in Bristol. Still cooked the lobster though on the neighbors stove.

Sounds like this is coming together, so we'll see you there!

Check the gasket/pump on that ol' coleman instead of a whole tank. You can buy new ones at any decent outdoor store. That's usually all you need to fix to get another 20 years out of one. Just screw off the old one and replace.

I think Big may respond better to your brews a-coolin rather than to log a-burnin!!

To all:

Went today and reconfirmed pavilion reservation at Lenoir City Park for the 11th and also made reservations at Calhoun's Restaurant for Fri eve, the 10th, at 7PM for those arriving from out of town.

Also, checked some useful mileage points. As mentioned way up above in this thread there are several motels at the exit 81 ramp off I-75 onto Highway 321. From that exit you proceed 3.1 miles SOUTH on Highway 321N (yes, you read that correctly)to righthand turnoff for Ft. Loudoun Marina/Calhouns Restaurant/Lenoir City Park. Follow signs to any of those and at 1.1 mi. from turnoff you come to Calhouns which is right beside Marina. Continue on behind Marina (past tennis courts) for 0.6 miles and you are at launch in Lenoir City Park. Hope that is all clear as mud to everyone!!! If anyone needs futher clarifications, e-mail me directly and we can exchange phone numbers.

Man...I wish it was only the wood. I'm kind of pricing another motor for the ol' 15er. I would hate to show up in my old alum. fishing boat...Maybe Janis would give me a Boston Whaler sticker to put on it!

Jim, I emailed Eric...he was still undecided when he emailed me today.

Is there a chance that the remnants of Hurricane Francis will be in eastern Tennessee on Saturday?
Jim Bennett posted 09-05-2004 10:42 AM ET (US)     Profile for Jim Bennett  Send Email to Jim Bennett
David et al,

Right now your guess is as good as mine and the weatherman's. All depends on what track Frances follows after it leaves FL. Currently, the long range forecast for Loudon,TN is 30-60% chance of showers and rain on Tues-Wed-Thurs, partly cloudy with 0% Fri, 20% Sat, 10% Sun so things look OK for now.

Farmer Dave posted 09-05-2004 09:19 PM ET (US)     Profile for Farmer Dave  Send Email to Farmer Dave
So, is that the "Chamber Of Commerce" forecast, or the real one!!! As slow as Francis is moving, she must be a century old, driving a Buick, sitting on 2 phone books to see over the dash!!!
keep us posted about the forecast!

I'm in Huntsville, AL as I write....returning today. I made a trade down here on a Evinrude 48 spl (mid-90's). They took the worn out 70 on trade. I paid them $500 difference and they did the work to change out the motor. I still have a little fine tuning to I'm still planning on riding with Eric.

Take care,

Farmer Dave, Dave et al,

According to (not CofC), the long range forecast for this area (Thurs 9th thru Mon 13th) is Partly Cloudy, temps in low 80's, and just 10-120% chance of rain. Heavy rain expected Tues nad Wed.

Glad to hear about "new" motor. Some good info on such motors recently in General Forum on "Johnson Reliability".While you are down there in Huntsville, see what you can do to keep Frances effects from coming this way!!

Jim, David (Farmer Dave) is on his way down here to take care of me, and we will not be attending this weekend. I have no electricity, no running water, and lots of damage. Those beautiful trees lying across the roads with power lines across them are pretty scarry. I am at a dealership in Daytona currently, bumming the computer for a post or 2. Factory had damage to the big doors and foaming area and will reopen as soon as the cleanup is complete. Hopefully...
Take care,

Very glad that all OK with you and your place (except trees). Kind of expected you might not be joining us this weekend. Sorry about that, but maybe next year.

One of my younger brothers who lives in Sebastian,FL(near Vero Beach)weathered out the hurricane(Frances) at my place on the Gulf side. We exchanged keys a few years ago just for that reason so either of us would have place to go. He went back yesterday but haven't heard anything from him yet.

Jim, do you have an idea of how many people will be camping and where? How many of the campers will have kids with them?

It now looks like my wife and older daughter will stay in North Carolina and I will make the trip with my 7-year-old. We will bring the 15 since it is so much easier to trailer than is the 19. We will try to arrive around 4:00 PM on Friday.

Jim Bennett posted 09-09-2004 08:22 AM ET (US)     Profile for Jim Bennett  Send Email to Jim Bennett

Sorry didn't respond last night.

Now that the FL & IN guests have had to pull out due to hurricane effects, as described in post above, the only other campers I know of are Landlocked and buddy from Nashville but they aren't arriving until Sat morning; I believe they are staying at Lotterdale Cove Campground and do not have children with them. Others from out of town/state have not indicated whether camping, moteling or returning home Sat. I am going to list below all currently expected attendees; some are bringing children. You might want to e-mail some other out-of-towners to discuss plans.

Current Expected Attendees to Tellico Lake Rendezvous

1. Jim Bennett(3) Loudon,TN Outrage 21
2. Barry Burtenshaw(3)(Barry) Dayton,OH Outrage 22
3. Chris Catron(2) (Landlocked) Nashville,TN Montauk
4. Sam Collins (5) Whitesburg,KY Neuport
5. Eric Drumm(2-3) (estress) Knoxville,TN Montauk
Barry Cochran (bc) Maryville,TN
6. Jon Hill(2) (jhill) Corinth,MS Montauk
7. David Jenkins(2) Durham,NC Striper(?)
8. Dee Karter(2) Lenoir City,TN Montauk
9. Chet Logan (2) (Marsh) Ooltewah,TN Montauk
10. L Sandidge(2) (LenoirMontauk)Lenoir City,TN Montauk
11. Chad Walters(4) (cj) Lenoir City,TN Sport
12. Tony Zucker(2-4) Knoxville,TN Sourpuss

There may be a couple more unconfirmed local attendees.

I would encourage all to reread the posts above which describe schedule, meeting place, time, what to bring, directions, etc. If any further questions or changes e-mail me directly and we can exchange phone numbers. Weather for Fri thru Sun is to be sunny and low to mid 80's.

Seven of us are meeting Friday eve at Calhoun's Restaurant on the water at Lenoir City for dinner at 6:30PM. Anyone else interested in joining us, let me know ASAP

I just spoke with Lauderdale Campground and the lady is reserving us a space for Saturday night as a "favor" she normally does not take reservations.

Apparently she has heard from a lot of folks interested in staying for the event but no one else has called back and confirmed.

She asked me to tell you that if you are planning to camp, please call her today and let her know for sure. Otherwise she may not be able to guarantee a site.

I just spoke to Lotterdale Campground at 865-856-3832 and he said that he had a double electric site on the water next to the beach and that we could tie up boats at that site. It is $38 per night for the two sites. So I reserved it, sites 26 & 27. Will that work for you Chris? Anyone else interested in camping Friday and Saturday nights?

To all:
Due to the following:
1) pullout of FL/IN contingent as described above because of hurricane effects
2) pullout of 2 of my guests from FL & AL for same reasons and
3) no additional replies for dining out tonight

we are cancelling the "group" reservation at Calhoun's for dinner tonight.

See you all tomorrow morning, 10AM, at Lenoir City Park launch. Directions to park launch are in post up above.

We are leaving Fairview (West of Nashville near Dickson) at 7:30 Central. Should arrive at campsite by around 11 central/12 eastern after meeting my dad to drop off my daughter for a visit.

Will launch from Lotterdale campground ramp as soon as we can get unloaded etc.

Assuming you guys depart at 11 and travel at a slow cruise, we should be just behind you as you pass heading south. We'll do our best to catch up.

Our Radio will be on 16 and I'll try and contact you when we get on the water.

By no means wait on us. We'll find you eventually - A lot to do before we can get there and RELAX.
