This is a report on a trip from southern Ilinois to Dauphin Island Alabama which is about 30 miles south of Mobile.

My wife and I recently moved to Carbondale, IL and we missed the salt water and using the old Nauset which had been stored back in Mississippi. So after a lot of renovation work, a new trailer, a new old motor, tuneing up the kicker, rewiring etc, I felt the boat was ready.

So we got a reservation and drove down last week. 600 plus miles!

Stayed at the Bayside Motel which has convenient slips on the bay. Caught a few Spanish Mackeral the first two days
and then some storms came up in which I didn't want to try the off shore rigs. But it is an easy run to most of the
rigs even in a small boat and that is one of the reasons we went to the island.

Tried the inshore fishing and found giant Jack Trevelles and sporty Layfish. Actually had more fun inshore then off.

One of the best things about the trip was that the Nauset ran better than ever! I used to have the orginal 1970 100
hp Evinrude on it up till last year when I bought a 1990 Johnson 88 Special from WhalerSailer along with a SS prop from BigShot. The combination with a light load in the boat gives me a speed of 43.6 mph (on my GPS) at 5400! Of couse Ispent most of my time down there running a comfortable 3000 rpm in two to three foot seas and had tested out the motor on the lakes in this area.

So again I fell like I've got a functioning boat that can take me out on the big water albeit not out too far.

Anybody else fish/boat around there?

Welcome to Southern Illinois. I grew up in Harrisburg, just East of Carbondale but now live in Florida. No salt water, but the Shawnee Nat'l Forest is a wonderful thing. I'm sure your Nauset will like the local lakes and rivers. My sister and brother in law keep a boat in Golconda Il on the Ohio river. It's a whole other sub-culture over there. Acually you may have the only Whaler in Southern Il. Something to be proud of.

Maybe I'll run into you some time down there. Have you been there lately?

Yes am enjoying the Southern Illinois area. Was out on the Ohio River at Golconda last weekend. Nice river quite a difference from the turbid Mississippi.

Was going today but north winds will take me to Dog River instead. Maybe will try Sunday.

Launched at Billy Goat Hole with wife and my sweet baby girl. Went South through the new cut at East end of Sand Island and cruised the gulf side all the way to where the houses end on Dauphin Island. Headed East and found a secluded spot East of the golf course and we had a picnic.
About 4 pm we headed back; were stopped by Alabama Marine Police (total assholes) then went back to the launch. There was a guy in a rare 17 Outrage and I gave him my number in case he wants to sell it. What a day! 85 and sunny-no humidity.

Sounds like a nice day except for the patrol.

Luckily I didn't get stopped last time down but they followed the guy behind me right up to me at the ramp at Billy Goat. Gave me a scare, thought they were going to check me as I have the Ilinois registration on the bow. But they kept on going.

One of the guys on this forum from Minnesota bought a nice 17 Outrage last year - paid $12,000. Seemed to have gotten a good deal. Good luck in getting one, that guy had to travel all over the country to get his.
