Consider this an open invitation to anyone who wants to experience my small part of Michigan's Huron River. I'm located just above the Portage Lake Dam, the river is navigable from the dam, into Portage Lake, and on up the river through a chain of 5 other lakes. (much info can be found on my web page at ). Total trip up the river is probably about 5 miles or so.. from one end to the other, with no stops is probably a 1.5 hour trip, 3 hours round trip(the river sections are slow/no wake areas).... add stops to swim, fish, lunch at the pub, and you've got a nice day planned.

Boat size is limited to those that can handle some of the shallow sections, although my biggest boat is a 18 foot pontoon (which has no problems with the trip), it is possible to navigate the river with a inboard ski boat....

Much of the Huron in this area is designated a natural, scenic river. It is a beautiful way to spend some time. There aren't any "public beaches", but there are a number of spots to anchor and swim, but deep and shallow waters. We have one resturant/pub on the chain (with two very long docks), Zukey Lake Tavern.. One public boat launch on portage lake (arrive early on a weekend, it fills up fast!), and three private launches...

I would be glad to hook up with anyone that wants to experience the river, I'm almost always around and on the water on the weekends, frequently in the evenings, and could probably even arrange a weekday (best time of all, all the crazies are at work and leave the river and lakes to those that really enjoy them!).

feel free to e/mail me at bob at if you are interested...

I've never done the chain of lakes /Huron River, I've thought about it several times. Maybe I can hook up with you sometime soon. I do have the next five days off, but I have to check with the War Department and see what they've got planned. Do you take the wife & kids ? I've got 12 & 10 year old sons who like to snorkel. Anyway, let me know if you'll be around and I'll check on my end. I'm from Farmington Hills, I have a 1982 Montauk 17.

Sounds good to me, I'm in White Lake, where the Huron is but a trickle. I'd love to go roam where it's a proper river. Any dates in mind?

Since there are limited launch sites and parking spaces on the river, I wasn't looking for a huge group... probably work best for individuals..

I'm open typically on evenings/weekends.... folks just need to let me know and I'll see If i can be available to do a bit of "guiding"....

Hey Bob, I think we would be able to join you soon. We are close to getting a 13 closing end of next week if all goes well. When are you planning this voyage or is an anytime kind of thing??

Best - send email if you like.

I wasn't suggesting a multi boat get together, just an offer to hook up with individuals and show them around a bit..

I'm pretty open as to dates, especially free on evenings and weekends, of course...

How far upstream from the Huron river mouth can we cruise? I launched this weekend from there, except I opted for Lake Erie because it was uncharacteristically flat enough for my 130 Sport. Anyway, there are two good launches there with plenty of parking and I was thinking it might have Whaler Rendezvous possiblities.
