It starts in the summer of '89 Manutoulin Island "Bayfield" Sound the place is "Cooks" dock a little used fishing port on the north channel. In the lagoon is a burnt out and sunk trading vessle which oringilly was hauling a cargo of horse shoes and coal.It is known to most at "Northeraire" as the "Wreck!"

Here we go!, DFM and I take 2 boat loads of young kids and parents out to the "Wreck" for an afternoon of breath hold diving and picknicking. It goes well. I salt the boat with local currency, every body has a great time, and it is a warm afternoon. DFM then spins a tale of "Great Lakes" Pirots and Priovteers to expllane the coins placed on the "Wreck"! None of the kids looks at the dates on the coins, they spend them (the loonies) at the local store!

Over the winter, DFM and I start a second plan! I take an old pair of "work" Boots and hack them with an axe! Then season them in a 5 gal bucket in the back yard with a couple of old ham bones that look on the line of ankles! God, if "Canadian customs woud have searched me I would most likely be still in "jail".

We arrive at "camp" and immediately go to the "Wreck". We suit up (scuba) and place the "new" items in the hull of the "wreck"

At this point mother nature turns aginst us. The week is cold and rainy, with bad wind and water for the 15 mile trip. The year is a wash out!

Again, we don't rest. DFM suggestes we get a "skull" for the following year. He finds one in a "comic book" ad and has it shipped to me. It is "creepy" when I open it up. I open up the eyes and mouth and nose. Then Epoxy it as it made of plaster of paris and will disolve in water.

We cross the border (thank god I didn't get searched!) how would you explane the "skull"?

We get to "Northernaire" about 10:AM. Launch the 25 and blast off to the "Wreck"! We now place the "new" skull in an appropriate place with a spike thru an eye ball hole! The trap is set!!!!

Mid week the weather gods are with us! It is warm no wind and 2 25' boat loads of kids and parents! by this time "salvage" man is a ring leader also!

We get to the "wreck" and picknick and party with the kids, a good time, however nobody wants to get "wet" I am suited in scuba and in the water, finally "Jason"(DFM and Gail's son) a 14 year old is convinced to go look over the wreck. He is the oldest and most experienced diver of the group!

Jason makes a couple of breath hold dives and doesn't get the "bait". I guess on dive #3 he gets it! I didn't see it but I am told he did a "water walk" that borders on impossible! He clears the side of a 25' Whaler Cuddy without touching a ladder or anything else! The only thing he says is "Holy Gees there is a "skull" down there!!!!!!!!!!" By this time his dad is "rolling!"

Canadian Vacations, who knows!
Time: 3 years
Result: Priceless!!!!

I can't wait to see what they do to the next generation of "clasic" whalers!

I am told that there is vidio of the "water walk" by PJ (Pete Judd) a Canadian dental surgen. I have never seen it!I am just gald I got to be a participant!
