I can't believe I didn't think about posting this until now. Fleet Week from a small boat on the Bay is truly a gas; I've done it half a dozen times over the past ten or twelve years, the last three years straight in my Whaler(s). This year I'm going out for sure on Saturday--maybe Sunday as well--and it would be very cool if a bunch of us with similar plans met up at some point. Here's my plan for Saturday:

--Meet my guests at the Petaluma Marina boat ramp at nine Saturday morning. (Launch fees at this great, never-crowded, easy-parking facility are only two- or three bucks, and the marina is right off Highway 101...I'll get directions for anyone interested).

--Cruise down the flat calm Petuluma River (about twelve-fifteen miles) through the beautiful wetlands and empty, grassy fields finally past Pt Sonoma and Blackpoint (another possible launch site for you north bay folks) and into San Pablo Bay (the northwest extension of SF Bay)...about one- to one-and-one-half hours, depending on stops for wildlife photos.

--Follow the broad San Pablo Bay channel down past San Rafael, under the San Rafael bridge, then cruise between Angel Island and Tiburon to a location south of Sausilito (where many of you others will want to launch and where maybe we should meet up).

--Hang in that general location (I'll probably get there between 10:30-11:00 a.m.) 'til we link up, then cruise around checking out the Bay, Alcatraz, the stunning S.F. skyline, the boats and navy ships...I'm not sure when the Blue Angels will start their air show this year, but if there's any interest from you Whalers I'll get that info today and post it here.

Please post if interested, or email me or call me at my office: 707-523-0733.

Thanks for that, diveguy. Maybe I'll start a little later this year. Every year it seems that my guests are getting tired of bouncing around (or more probably of my company) by the time the Angels (or the Canadians last year) start to fly, so we end up watching as we putt back up the Bay.

Where are you going to be, when, and in what Whaler?

I suspect I will be there in my Conquest 23.

I'll be out on sat. somewhere... Launching out of sausalito and hopefully will watch the show by Alcatraz. The air race looks like it's going to be really cool. This is my first year actually watching the show and am looking forward to it.

You'll love it, I promise. A couple of times when the wind has kicked up in the afternoon I've watched the air show in the lee of Alcatraz. I'll be on channel 77, by the way, and you'll probably hear me calling for 'continuous wave members.' See ya there!

My dock is at san francisco marina. Right in front where all the blue angels fly by.
I will be at my dock on my boat watching. I may or may not leave the dock. Might just stay on the boat.

I hung out in the lee of Angel Island. A couple made a pass about 100 ft over head. As my 4 year old god son would say, "weawy youd". Awe inspiring show, though. Now if we could just get the 40 foot yachts and sailboats to watch where they're going...

Nice shots. I had some fun about 10 years ago. I was up on
Hawk Hill on the Marin Headlands with a 600mm lens and doubler
to shoot migrating hawks, and the the Blue Angels were using
Hawk Hill for their west side turnaround. I couldn't get
more more than the nose of the plane with that rig but it was
