I will be taking my classic Montauk for a couple of weeks of touring, exploring and sight seeing in Eastern NC in early May. I plan to stage out of Goose Creek State park on the Pamlico river , then Beaufort followed by Wilmington as bases for day trips on the Inter coastal as well as the Capes, weather permiting. We will camp some , B&B some and feast in some local restaurents I don't fish much but enjoy casting for shrimp and catching crabs and just being on the water in one of our favorite areas. While I have been there before I would welcome any local advice and suggestions. Thank you.
Art M.

We journeyed a few miles up the Cape Fear River and found ourselves in a restricted Military Zone. It was not well marked on the chart--just a tiny magenta line that my old eyes could not see well. We did not have any trouble seeing the Marines in a gun boat that interdicted us. Watch out for that area!

Art M, If you are open for other boats to join you, please post your tentative plans as they develop. And when the trip is over, please give us a trip report. Thanks!

I was wondering if anyone would like to plan something for later in the summer? I just started a new job, am trying to find another, and then trying to cram some spanish classes in between the two at the moment. But I would like to do some cruising this summer. I thought perhaps it might be fun to meet up at the Simmons Sea Skiff show in Wilmington?

Doesnt pertain to whalers but I thought others might find it interesting and more worth a trip.

Sorry, please ignore my mistakes. Final exam season puts me in the mental state to hug myself and rock quietly in the corner.

grandpas68, I always try to go to the wooden boats show they hold at CFCC and so would like to go to that show as well.
But have already planned to go see the Tallships up in Beaufort that w/end.

Wilmington and NC area folks seem to be a little shy about getting together for meets. I have no idea why, the weather is great, the locations are wondeful... I guess it's just the enthusiasm that is a little weak, or everyone is either working or fishing I guess.

We need to organise another NC get together!

I thought tall ships was June 3rd? I might be getting my events confused.

June - July - October? Heck, I obviously don't even know what MONTH it is right now!

Quick check on the web says:-

Tall ships = June 30th -July 5th 2006 Beaufort NC

Simmons Sea Skiffs = July 29th 2006 Wilmington NC

Sorry about that Andrew, I guess I CAN, and will be, going to them BOTH... Wahoo!

Hope the exams are going well.

Well lets get some other people interested. I cant go to Beaufort due to other family obligations, but maybe if you can spread the word to some others. I take it you are going with gene's group? Finals are over, but i appreciate it. Just working now to pay bills and hopefully get the powdercoating done on the whaler.

I think I sort of hijacked the thread there, sorry.
The whole coast of North Carolina is perfect for Whalin', camping and B&B'ing.
The Cape Fear river has everything from the port, (maritime festival today, wish I had remembered in time and gone to it Duh!) to the remote fishing spots where you may see no-one all day. Pamlico and Beaufort are wonderful marine rich areas, steeped in history, with thousands of places to explore.
I guess what I am saying is, you can not go wrong around the Outer Banks and the areas you are thinking of going.
Have fun, relax and put yourself into Carolina mode.
Drop some of us locals a line when you get into town, be good to meet up with a new face or two.

Happy Whalin'
Simon C
