Hello All,
Well, last year we had what I think was a successful Continuouswave Great Lakes Holiday Rendezvous Get Together, Anyone interested in doing it again this so let's start posting ideas on when, where, and how we want to do it.....

Pat -

I'm in.

I suggest a Saturday evening.

I'd volunteer, but my place would be a bit cramped and parking is lousy in the City.

I think perhaps the weekends of Dec. 9 or December 16 may be best for me....

Cicada posted 10-31-2006 09:14 AM ET (US)     Profile for Cicada  Send Email to Cicada
I'd go for the week-end of the 9th then the 16th. The 16th is getting closer to the Christmas holiday and may make it a little more difficult for people to attend. Either way we're interested.

If people would like to have it at somebody's house rather than a restaurant etc. we'd be happy to have it over at ours.

There was a good turn out last year and we had a great time. Looking forward to it again this year.

Hey Pat-

Thanks for starting this up-

I'd be interested, and at this point I don't think we have anything scheduled for either of the two weekends mentioned, but that could change in a hurry...

Hope we can get together-

We'd be in if it's closer than Detroit...

Last year was great at Pat's. We are open but you guys are the core group. Have Party, We'll Travel!

I said before I can arrange pricing on the Detroit Princess, docked on the Detroit River, N of Cobo and S of Ren Cen building. It is a very nice boat, four decks, variety of things to do, blues cruise in evening after dinner or show cruise and pricing at Detroit Marriot, Ren Center.

Detroit Princess

We've done it a couple of times and enjoyed ourselves very much. The boat runs through New Years.

Best time, especially for aft decks, is warm weather but no problem this time of year either. I always figured a Whaler rendezvous would be cool there with the access to the Detroit River.

If you wanna do it, let me know, if you wanna do it in nicer weather, let me know.

Hi guys,

Joy and I are going to be in the city of Great Lakes, IL (near Waukegan) on the 11th thru the 21st of December.

Not that we are trying to hint for an invitation (yes we are), but I would like to meet some of our Northern brethren if you have the get-together in that time period.

We also had a great time last year at Pat's. Count us in, as long as weather and scheduling cooperate.

Ace & Joy,
of course everyone who wants to participate is welcome, the more the merrier....

Nancy & I are also willing to host again, although we did hear and see rumor that Paul & Suzanne were talking about hosting, so I thought I would wait and see what their decision is.

I think the in house party/Pot Luck, Buffet, whatever you want to call them are much more conducive to everyone being able to interact with everyone else, it sure worked well last year.....but I'll go along with whatever the majority decides.....

jimh posted 11-03-2006 10:05 PM ET (US)     Profile for jimh  Send Email to jimh
I really enjoyed the gathering last year. I thought one of the nicest elements of the party was having some Igloo coolers with tan pleat cushions out on the porch full of ice and beer. That really made it a Whaler party.

We are definitely coming to any party within driving distance.

See you all there!

Paul makes a terrific chili...

Depending on the dates, I'd be willing to drive nearly anywher e in Michigan I suppose.

Suzanne and I are looking at either the 9th or 15th to host. Does anyone have any preferences for date?

It's not quite time to put the coolers away anyway.

9th is fine with me as well. It is in pencil on my Calendar, but I'm also holding the 16th open.

9th is good for Nancy & I as is the weekend of the 16th...

Paul, are you written in stone for hosting ?

If you are, we can start making a list of who wants to bring what...

Any ideas for Whaler / Marine related field trips for the group this year during the day of the party ?

Buckda posted 11-06-2006 06:41 PM ET (US)     Profile for Buckda  Send Email to Buckda
I recommend a museum with information about boat-building and a couple of other classic boats - Chris Craft and Gar Wood boats.

The Algonac historical society might be interesting.

Looks like it is going to be the week-end of the 16th. Suzanne and I are looking forward to having everyone over. Catch up with people we didn't see this year and hopefully have a few new faces show up.

It's in stone.

A little pot luck sounds great. Nothing real fancy. I may have to bow out of the daytime stuff. Too bad. I really enjoyed Dawson's last year.

Talk to you soon.

To Great Lakes Whaler people: I am new to this site but not new to Whalers, as I currently have two-an 1984 18 foot Outrage and a 1996 24 Outrage + a 5.2 Whaler Harpoon sailboat. I live in Grand Rapids, MI but do most of my boating in Little Traverse Bay. I am trying to make contact with other Lake Michigan Whaler people. Have I found the right place? Dave Smith

Yes--Many of the thousands of people around the globe that daily participate here are located in the Great Lakes.

You found the right group of people. Most of my boating is down out of 3 locations. Grand Haven, Frankfort, and Port Huron. Lake Michigan gets most of my time though.

As always the holdiay get together is open to everyone. You should come....

It's supposed to be an El Nino year - remember the last one very well up here in H. Siberia when we built our X Games skatepark. We were pouring concrete well into NOV and some, as I recall in early Dec. Might not make 60 but you never know, could hit 50s. NOT winterizing boat.

No matter how cold it gets it should be toasty inside. The VCR is covered. Do we need a projector?

Any more interest out there? We'd like to start getting a handle on how many to expect.

Should be a fun evening. Pat's was great last year.

We have a door prize for some lucky whaler out there. I can assure you that it will be highly coveted and may lead to some envy. If that doesn't convince you to attend I don't know what will.

We'll probably do some kind of a main dish, have chips, dips, soft drinks etc. Evenings program is entirely up to you guys.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again and hopefully some new faces.

Hello All,
All three suggestions for field trips by Buckda, Jeff, & Jerry sound good to me.......we should take a survey of attendees as to who, when, and which of the suggested activities most would like to see and go from there.

Paul & Suzanne,
let us know what the food theme is and what you want us to bring. Nancy & I are looking forward to the get together, we certainly enjoyed last years festivities.

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Spent the week up in Tawas wishing I hadn't put the Outrage in storage. Great weather and for some reason sitting in a blind doesn't quite compare to being out on the boat.

Haven't decided on a food theme yet. Will probably do some kind of a roasted beef dish for the entree. Most likely a buffet.

For the people that don't know us, Suzanne and I live in Royal Oak, Michigan. A suburb of Detroit that's kind of meshed into the Metro area. A suburb surrounded by suburbs. Good restaurants and some entertainment etc. Decent schools and still have the concept of neighborhoods. A quick run up I-75 from Downtown Detroit. I'll be emailing people directions, map etc.

Looking at about 7:00 pm on Saturday the 16th. If this doesn't fit with the day's activities let me know.

Doesn't hurt to bring the videos. Our house is pretty compartmentalized so there'll be different things going on in different areas.

Don and Gail,
Sorry to hear you can't make it. Always enjoy your company.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

If it is still on the 16th, Joy and I would like to drop in. We are staying in Wauekegan, a mere 6-hour drive away.

Tell me what we can bring. We will have been in Waukegan for about a week by then.

I got basic directions off of mapquest -- can I maybe get a street address through e-mail?

We won't stay long, but would like to see some Whaler brethren.

Thanks in advance,

Ace -

I am running a similar route (from Chicago). Depending on when you decide to leave, it may take more or less time.

The biggest bit of advice I can give you: Exit at Irving Park and follow it to the lake front/Lake Shore Drive.

Take Lake Shore Drive all the way to the Museum of Science and Industry, follow the signs to the Skyway. (Stony Island - rough looking neighborhood, but stay in middle lanes - they dump you on a ramp to the Skyway).

$2.50 toll on Skyway, $.50 at the Indiana State Line, and $.30 when you re-join I-94 at Lake Station...worth every penny.

Paul & Suzanne,
Con and I have another party we have to go to. Sorry that we won't be able to join the Midwest Whaler friends at your new home. Notice, I didn't use the term Great Lakes Whaler ...., so that Larry won't reprimand me. Cheers to all. If BW1 wouldn't have been locked away and the lack of docks at the launch ramps, we would have been out on the water over Thanksgiving day weekend. Warm for here, in the middle 50's and very little wind. Only 173 days until Memorial Day weekend. Looking for to seeing everyone next summer.

Martha and Con,

Sorry to hear you can't make it. Thought it'd be nice to return the favor of the dinner and good time at your place. Enjoyed seeing you guys at Mullet.

I've sent directions, maps etc. out to people that have made a committment to coming to dinner on Saturday the 16th at 7:30pm. If anybody else would like directions let me know.

I highly doubt that I'll be able to make any kind of a daytime activity. Work schedule leading up to the 16th looks very busy. I'll need the time to cook on Saturday.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Looking forward to meeting you and am sure you should enjoy yourselves. Maybe a little dessert of some sort would be nice.

Sorry to hear you're coming solo. Was looking forward to meeting your family.

Last count here including wives, significant others etc. there are about 17 people coming for sure and 3 or 4 undecided. Alot of pretty good people. Maybe even a little talk about Whalers. Hopefully the food'll compare to the comradery (I'm cooking).

If you're going to be at the morning visit to Lockeman's, Dave has requested that you each bring a photo of yourself and your boat (in, on, next to, etc) photo - not one of you and one of your boat.

Sounds like he's going to have some fun stuff going on for us.

Hello All,
I talked with Dave at Lockeman's and he is expecting our group on Saturday morning, they're open from 9am - 1pm and he has some surprises he wants to show us. Don't forget, He also wants everyone to bring a photograph of you on or near your Whaler.
Buckda, CDNwhaler, & I will be heading to Lockeman's as close to 9am as possible. There will be morning refreshments, coffee, donuts, etc.
I just spoke with a representative at Gregory Boat Co. The tricked out Outrage 22 we've all been drooling over is still there in the showroom and he said we are welcome to come on over and look her over.....they are open from 9am - 2PM on Saturday.
According to the web site the Algonac-Clay historical museum Buckda posted about, they closed December 10, 2006 for renovations and will re-open in March 2007. So they are off the list of things to do.

So I figure during or after the two field trip spots, we can find a location for a light lunch, and then of course on to Paul & Suzanne's later for dinner & festivities.

I think it would be good time to sound off so we can get an idea of exactly who is going to make the Field Trip portion, so we know who to keep an eye open for and no one will get left behind.......

All this being said, I know Paul has sent out maps, directions, etc, if anyone coming form out of town needs horses, ponies, bells, whistles, or anything else please feel free to contact me. My Cell #1-248-892-8580 in on 24/7

I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend

As much as I would like to, I will not be able to make the field trip portion of the day. However, when you go see the tricked out Whaler, please take a lot of pictures so that I can copy them from you.

We are still planning on coming Saturday night.

Can't get over this Chicago weather -- last night we had our window open for a while, and were still warm, so we had to turn on the Air Conditioner! And I brought all of these warm clothes to wear . . .Specifically asked for a suite with a fireplace, and now we can't even use it! But I hear that next week promises some change.

Thanks Dave and Dorothy Zammit at Lockeman's for developing the new "clubhouse" and for your hospitality earlier in the day (not to mention the neat club sweatshirts and other goodies). Thanks JimH for getting out to the J. W. Westcott Co. ( ), and for the ride in the legendary Detroit River MailBoat. And thanks Pete for the Big Fish Little Boat tape.

This was a Holiday Rendezvous we'll have a hard time topping!

Hello All,
Yes, the 2nd Annual GLBWCC Holiday Rendezvous was a great time, everything sure fell into place nicely.....Those attending the Field Trip were, Peter, Jimh, Kingfish, Buckda, Don Jahnke, Jeff, Bill (Jeff's Dad), Jerry, and Me. First stop Lockeman's Hardware & Boats for Coffee, Bagels, etc, got to look at some new technological gadgets, tell some stories, and Christen the "Clubhouse".

Then we were off to the Gregory Boat Co. to look over the tricked out Outrage 22 there's been so much talk about.....Anyone have an enclosed boat trailer? I think if it were mine I'd have to figure out something like that to keep it spic n span.

Then we were off to "Sinbad's" on the Detroit River for lunch overlooking the water. The Pickerel Sandwich was excellent, not to mention the Clam Chowder...

Lastly, for the end of the field trip portion of the Holiday Rendezvous, at Jimh's suggestion, we were off to the foot of 24th Street at the Detroit River in Detroit, Mi. to the J.W. Wescott Co. who runs the mail / Pilot Boat that services all the Great Lakes Freighters. When someone asked if we could board her and look her over, the Captain on duty said "Grab some life jackets I'll take you all for a cruise" We had a great cruise that lasted about 45 minutes.....what a great time.

And then after a short break, nap, coctail, it was on to Paul "Cicada" and Suzanne's for some great food, additional comradarie, and where attendee's the likes of PeteB88, his wife Ellen, WhalerAce, and his wife WhalerJoy got in on the celebration also....a few door prises were raffled and a PeteB88 played his copy of Giant Tuna Small Boat...I was going to post some photo's but have just realized I'm on my desk top and the photo's are all downloaded onto Nancy's Laptop so I'll post them as soon as I can....thanks again to everyone for the Great Friendship, fun, food, and a second unforgettable GLBWCC Holiday Rendezvous.....

It was a great time. Thanks again to all the SE Michigan members for making this a wonderful weekend. Pat and Nancy - thanks again for your wonderful hospitality.

JimH - thanks for making a wonderful memory with that side trip to the J.W. Wescott Co. Dave Z - thanks to you and your crew for the great I-Command and NMEA2000 display and the refreshments and as always - the great company.

Paul and Suzanne - what a wonderful place - you guys have made it a great home and are first rate hosts...and Paul, I elect you the official chef of the GLBWCC...that beef was wonderful!

What a great time and a wonderful get together with friends old and new. I can't believe we also got to go boating on the Detroit River in mid-December....only 4 more months till the season opens up again!

Happy Holidays guys.

Man the trip to Detroit goes a lot faster without the boat in tow!

Oh...and the Verado visor....

...well, this evening, that old visor proudly displayed the deep-seated corporate social responsibility ingrained at the Brunswick factory in China where it was made and helped a homeless man shade his eyes from the mid-winter sunlight at the exit from I-94 to Irving Park Road in Chicago.

If that thing rises from the dead again and manages to find it's way back into my posession, I swear to God here in front of everyone....I'll go out and buy a Mercury Verado........

(hitch plug)!!

I envy everyone that went on the day's activities. Would have loved going out on the Westcott etc.

Suzanne and I really enjoyed having everyone for dinner. Great bunch of people.

Dave - Glad to hear that the visor found it's sense of social responsibility and found its way to be proudly displayed downtown Chicago. Gonna miss it.

A GLBWCC event? Whatever that stands for. Sounds more like an event sanctioned by the E&EOMAS.

While awaiting some photos from home Aside,
I'll take a guess at BlackMax's acronym:

Evinrude and E-TEC Owners Mutual Admiration Society (E&EOMAS)?
Really, I'm not BlackMax though...

Now, Now, Boys & Girls, all you've seen in this thread are some members of the Greal Lakes Boston Whaler Cruising Club (unfortunately some others weren't able to attend or didn't hear about it) planning and carrying out a successful holiday Rendezvous, No bashing, and/or badmouthing of anyone or anything....personally, I'd like to keep it that way.....Photographs will be posted soon.....

I think there's enough room to add BackMax's fleet on the board. It would be a great Christmas present for him knowing he's in great company. ?action=view¤t=DSCN0852.jpg

I'd like to know what your point is here......I don't see it mentioned here anywhere in print or photo that you have to be an Evinrude / E-Tec owner to participate, although I would like to think we'd get all Whaler Owner's attending......this was open to anyone who wanted to respond & ought to try attending, it was great fun....with great people to interact and meet with..... even if I only own a 1985 Revenge 22 WT powered with a 1985 Yamaha 225.......

No point just a little humor, obviously not appreciated.
I get the message, as I do elsewhere around here too.

Let me try again. Is that a CRESTLINER in your new Boston Whaler clubhouse? Fourfish must be the club president.

Or. Is that a "white" Fitch on that "Black" boat? The guy clearly screwed up his color co-ordination. Many even go so far as to paint outboards to match the boat colors.
I've even seen Mercs painted white to match boats, obviously by some mentally challenged designer.

Most comedians I've heard & liked usually attach their names to their work so that people that appreciate them will be able to buy their material....or if they don't wouldn't.....

Even thought the GLBWCC clubhouse is located at an Evinrude dealer, there is room under our tent for all outboard brands.

It was really a very fun day with a lot of good fellows and ladies. We had Boston Whaler owners from several states. Let's see:

--South Carolina

and international visitors from

--Ontario, Canada

We had a wonderful morning at David Zammitt's Lockeman's Boat and Hardware, a trip to Gregory Boat Co., lunch at Sinbad's, and a visit to the Westcott Pilot Boat station. The weather could not have been better.

Dinner at host Paul and Suzanne's was fabulous. The cuisine set a new standard to elegant dining at a boating event.

I have some more photos and will add them soon.

Interesting that the "newest" attendee to this rendezvous owns a 22' Whaler hull with twin Mercury motors.

Even though we met that morning at an Evinrude dealership, his response before he left was something along the lines of "We have to get together with the boats up in the North Channel."

Nothing was said about engine brands. That fight seems to be fought with keyboard courage.

BlackMax, whoever you are, you are welcome to come to a rendezvous - in fact, you should.

But leaving that aside, since you DIDN'T attend this one, and seem to have nothing nice to say about our get-together, I'm left scratching my head as to your business and purpose on this thread?

Is it to incite something? Is it simply that you're being a troll? Did you want to attend, but couldn't? I'm truly trying to figure it out....

....well not that hard.

Becoming an active participant in the "real" communities that are attached to this virtual community is an important part of keeping things around here civil. I realize that not everyone can do so, but those of us who can should try.

I have to admit I'm having trouble understanding how a HOLIDAY fun get together thread is getting hijacked about those lunky whachmacallits on the back of our WHALERS. Good grief.

Well, now that we are home again in warm South Carolina, please let me add our kudos to Paul and Suzanne for a wonderful party. Joy fell in love with the house (and fireplace) and the peppermint bark.

The house, as Paul said, was compartmentalized. What he didn't say was that every room was full of food!

It was great meeting in person all of these personalities that until now were just screen names. We immediately felt at home and among friends. I cannot express just how much fun that we had. And I was just floored when Joy told me Saturday night that it was time to leave, as it was well past midnight! It seemed like we had just gotten there!

Thanks to you all for welcoming us into your group.

I registered as Javawhaler so I could wish all of you a Merry Christmas! It was great fun at our house and Paul and I have been thinking about it and talking about it all week! It has been fun reading all the great posts about the day and seeing the pics of the "club".

Merry Christmas!

PS As Christine says, five months to go!

One of the best things I have ever done is buy a Boston Whaler. I would have never imagined the great benefit of Whaler ownership is about the boats.

Best to all, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and thanks to each and everyone of you who contribute to this site, the community and who have helped all of us one time or another with our questions. Special thanks to Jimh who makes all this possible.

Those of you who weren't there or couldn't make it, you missed a good thing.

It seems that no matter what thread I read, someone tries to hijack it and get into an outboard war. So, since one of my Whalers is in the Great Lakes region, I am willing to help put an end to this argument. My offer is simple: Blackmax or Bob or anyone else is welcome to back their Whaler up to mine and tie on stern to stern. Stick as many of your whatever brand motor on it, and I will demonstrate how fast you can be pulled backwards, and swamped. Just a simple put up or shut-up. Of course perhaps Jim will eventually get tired of the bickering between these children and just BLACK-LIST them so we can get back to the real value of this web site which is to share information that is of benefit to others. Yes, I think mine is bigger, badder, and better than everyone else's, but I don't go around mouthing off about it. Whalers are expensive boats, and I expect the Whaler community to have a little more class than to behave like middle schoolers. So Merc men, FICHT men, whatever, you now have a challenge, tie on and get the ride of your life, or just shut-up and go away!!

No, I am not trying to hi-jack this thread, so Jim feel free to move this wherever you find it most appropriate. Do whatever editing you like, you are the moderator, and this is your web-site, and if you want to sell tickets to the above event, I'd just like to see them go to a charitable organization. Perhaps we could hold some in reserve to send the hi-jackers to a web etiquette training class. Assuming people agree that they have enough gray mater left between their ears that hasn't been polluted by mercury, otherwise let's send it all to charity.
