I am heading to Grand Haven this weekend for some time with the In-Laws. Any one up for some boating on Saturday?

Ya man! All I've been is a drive-way Whaler, gotta get that funk off of me!! I think I'm going to keep the 13 by the way and sell the 11.5.

What's the plan?

I'll stop by, I have to get "GRAY WHALEr" out on the Big Lake. A trip from Holland to Grand Haven would do her well.

No firm plan yet but, I would like to spend some time on the big lake.

I am driving into Spring Lake late tonight and will be off to Illinois tomorrow morning for business and be returning Thrusday evening. I will probably spend Friday on the water with the family and hope to have Saturday to run around at will. I am most likely going to haul the Newport over but, am toying with pulling the 22 Guardian over just for giggles. We will see.

That is a helluva drive. Any way, when you do finally get to Michigan / the Great Lakes some day, you need to plan to stay for at least a week.

It's been a great summer and plenty left - if you have the time I'd hook up and roll on over. There are tons of places to see, five great lakes and 11,000 inland lakes.

james--You should plan to come to the Great Lakes next summer, 2010, for some cruising. But one thing: when you get back east, don't tell anyone about it.

Too late......The "Pure Michigan" ads are working. Maybe they should change the target market.....just whaler owners.

I look forwar to seeing you, the kids and the ribside in Michigan next year.

Everyone else,

I plan to put in at the Harbor Island ramp on the Grand River (Grand Haven) on Saturday about noon. I think Dave (buckda) will be joining me as well. The is to go boating and that is about the extent of the plan for now.

Jeff -

keep an eyeball on the weather. I'm very interested, but Sunday looks like the "better" day right now...

We will see what the report says in the morning. I put off boating today as it was rain all afternoon here. Radar showed rain all across the west side of the lake. Never the less it did not start raining here until 5 minutes ago.

Rain and storms this morning. Hopefully this afternoon will clear up.

Went out on Sunday. 4 to 7 footers. We ended up fishing lake Macatawa but nothing was biting due to the rain. Downtown Grand Rapids is still without power after last night's several rounds of strong storms.

were you out on Sunday?, I put in on the river near the gravel pits and ran down to Lake Michigan and back, along the way I encountered 3 whalers, 1. 15' in beautiful shape with 4 POB, and 2 others beached in front of the musical fountain....
And I made it back onto the trailer 2 min. before the storms hit, it was ugly out there...

Power is back on in town, so I have a full size keyboard again instead of my iPhone.

Well I actually got out Whalering on Saturday (not on my boat) and Sunday. Saturday things kind of just fell into place and I had an opportunity to look at a Whaler up in Muskegon for another out of state CW member. Out of respect for both parties, I will keep the details on the boat and on the member quiet until there is a signed deal on the boat. It is just that kind of deal. None the less the rain stopped as I got to the Marina and we ended up Sea Trialing the vessel on Lake Muskegon and eventually made it on to the big lake where we motored for a short ride through solid 6-8's.

On Sunday I was hooking up the Whaler to head for home when I decided to try and fit in a short ride. So my wife, son, mother in-law and I headed out to Spring Lake for a short lap around the lake and bayous. It was sunny but VERY windy. There was a chop on some of the lake and other protected parts where very nice. It was a fun time even though we never made it to the big lake. We were packed up and on 96 heading for home by 3pm. We missed all of the really bad stuff on Sunday.

I was using my 19 Outrage classic up in Door County on the WI side.

Nice partly sunny and DEAD FLAT conditions for both Sat and Sun! Mid 60's Sat, mid 80's on Sun. Were we on the same Lake?

Straight line winds in excess of 65 mph came through west Michigan at the north end of Spring Lake on Sunday evening (6:30 pm). Today the town of Fruitport is still closed to non-citizens, no water, no power, no phone....
It was ugly, I wish I was on your side of the lake..

Crew - Ellen and I were planning to meet Jeff R and fam on Spring Lake but they had to head back before we were able. So we took the OR 17, a cooler and fishing rods out in anticipation of a wonderful day on the water. We launched at Fruitport (three blocks from Casa Paradiso) and cruised to Grand Haven. We beached the boat across from the seawall and kicked back.

I was concerned about changing weather conditions and actually saw dark clouds building inland and to the SW. Around 5 pm I turned on the weather radio. "NOAA" said that a front was approaching from the west and was expected to hit Ludington at ~ 5:20 and Muskegon light at 6:48. At 5:15 I said, "let's get out of here..."

The cruise back is long because of extensive "No Wake" zones but I throttled up a bit. We watched dozens of boats heading out towards the big lake and many others as well.

I went WOT watching over my shoulder to Fruitport No Wake and at the ramp we started to feel some rain drops. We were #2 to take out and by the time we tied up to the dock it was obvious we were going to get wet.

I had to hike to Pomona Park overflow lot w/ 10 wk old new boat dog #2 to get the rig. I got to the ramp, backed down and the wind started picking up w/ three lined up waiting for two ramp spots. Within a few minutes the leading edge was hitting and I lashed the Outrage to the dock with the excellent lines Bart included with the boat, double checked everyting and suddenly all hell broke loose.

I had the trailer in the water, Ellen ran to the 4 Runner, I stayed with the boat as long as it made sense and helped this other dude try to secure his boat to the dock with close line basically.

By now it was straight line wind, hail and more intense than a mountain gully washer, Ran to the 'Runner and could barely pull the door shut. We took a direct hit. It was like a pukey yellow white out with crap flying everywhere. The car was buffeting like moderate to heavy turbulence in an airliner but got worried when the back felt like it was lifting. It lasted at least 10 minutes or more.

We knew there were boats on Spring Lake including the Sheriff who was going out when we were coming in.

From the car I could see tops of canopy White Oaks flying straight line East and more junk in the air. The whole time the dude next to us was trying to load his boat!!!.

I could see the boat pitching in the mirrors but holding fine.

When it was over we got out to load the boat (no damage) and this dude and his girl idled up to the ramp in a 4 Winns cuddy - I asked him if he rode out the storm and he said they did and that "we just climbed into the cuddy and shut the door and got blown into the weeds."

There was stuff on the ground everywhere. The dude who pulled out just before the main event got out of the parking area however, his brother, driving an Explorer, was folowing him out of the ramp area. As he waited to pull out onto Main (3rd) a tree fell on his vehicle and smashed the hell out of it.

We could not get out of the ramp area and parked the rig to walk home. The canvas shop across from the ramp at like 10 canopy tress uprooted in his yard. The park was devistated. We were freaking out - the Bed and Breakfast was all messed up, pwer lines down everywhere - we could not take a direct route to our house- smashed houses, trees down, wires everywhere.

We finally got home, neighbors took severe hits - our house was sparred. However the garage took a major hit and three trees (80-90 ft White Oaks) tops came down on the garage.

We had no pwr or communications until yesterday actually.

Some houses are being "totalled out" by insurance companies. The 13 was safe. More later.

I was clearly the most awesome natural event I have ever experienced in real life. Or this life!!

If you were on the beach by the fountain @ 5:30 I saw your boat. Glad to hear no major damage for you, and the family is safe.

I was for sure, we were dragging up to get back to the ramp around 5:30 - were you in a boat? I think I saw a Montauk a couple of post classics and a sweet Outrage.

Ya Brus, I saw you go by heading out to channel. Thought I was looking at a government boat. Nice rig - do you live around here? Did you get caught in the storm?

Zeeland is home base for you? Did you trailer your boat to Grand Haven?

bruser posted 08-15-2009 04:13 PM ET (US)     Profile for bruser  Send Email to bruser
Ys that was me, I get quite a few looks with that boat, people don't know who is near them, and I get quite a few nods and waves ( being friendly just in case)
I tow the boat up to GH from Zeeland, its about 30 min from my house to the river...
