moose and I are planning an overnight to Beaver Island June 18-19. There are motels on the island and there looks to be plenty of areas to explore, including adjoining islands. This is the best time that we can make it so the date is fixed for us. We have a neighbor who lives on the island in the summer and when he gets back from Florida, we will post up additional information.

Anyone care to join us?

Terry & Donna

I'm interested too, I have some very close friends that were born & raised on the Island and still have homes on St. James Bay three houses down (White Roof & Brown roof across street) from the Old Coast Guard Station (Red Roof on Point)....

Weather and wave conditions can be "hit or miss" making the 33 mile run each way from Charlevoix that time of the year.

As a matter of fact, of all of the times I have been to Charlevoix during the summer months, I would say only about 25% of the time is the weather acceptable for both legs of a trip out there.

Hoosier posted 03-03-2011 08:36 AM ET (US)     Profile for Hoosier  Send Email to Hoosier

Please define "acceptable" weather. Dave, in his 25, would consider anything up to Force 10 acceptable....;-)

On a more serious note, what is the planned departure port?

home Aside posted 03-03-2011 08:41 AM ET (US)     Profile for home Aside  Send Email to home Aside
I would think Charlevoix would be the departure point. If for no other reson that the Ferry could be followed if things got iffy.

Charlevoix is the plan. If the lake is too lumpy, we can always tour Lake Charlevoix or surounding lakes.

That is not an accurate characterization of me.

Dave, I meant that as a complement to your sense of adventure. If Kathy and I can make it we'll be leaving from St. Ignace.

Hoosier, Grays Reef with a south west wind in a 21' Whaler, now there is a sense of adventure. ;-)

I've never made the trip to Beaver Island in June, always later in the summer, but clearly it's the best bet for light winds.

The trip from St. Ignace sounds great. Will that be your return route, or is this part of a larger trip? I was trying to figure out a way I could leave Beaver on the 19th and head to Cedarville. Logistics and time where the only things stopping that plan.

Looking forward to this.

June will be here before we know it, lets hope it will have stopped raining by then.
Moose, our plan would be the leave and return from St. Ignace. I've always wanted to see the bridge from underneath. If fuel in the UP gets to $5+/gal, this is going to be an expensive weekend. I was hoping to do a longer adventure up the Eastern Shore of Superior but this season is starting to look too short.

Moose and I just had our skippers meeting with our neighbors who live on Beaver in the summer. We discussed restaurants and lodging and other attractions. Just outside of the harbor there are Model-T’s in about 10 feet of water that have been there for 60+ years, and there is a wreck at the south end of the island. If the weather is good, we could visit High Island that has large sand dunes or Garden Island that has Indian burial grounds.

All the islands around Beaver are in thin and rocky water so it will take some good navigation to get close to land. In most cases, we won’t be able to beach the boats but will have to wade ashore.

Moose and I expect to go to Lake Charlevoix Friday evening for an early trip over on Saturday and return Sunday afternoon.

Who is still interested? Who would be staying on-shore or on their boats?

We should have additional information on lodging soon. We shouldn’t have too much trouble getting rooms as it is still early in the season for the area. All the motels are within walking distance of the docks.

I'm still interested, waiting for confirmation on my days off in June

Rounded up some info for any interested parties.

I spoke to most of the hotel operators in the St. James area over the past few days. The Erin Motel, downtown across the street from the Shamrock Bar & Grill, was my first choice, but the person there said they have a 7 day cancelation policy, ouch. Both the Harbor View Motel and the Emerald Isle Hotel indicated they didn't have any rooms for just June 18th, there may have been a 2 night minimum stay requirement in play.

The Beaver Island Lodge has a better cancelation policy for this type of trip. They said they'd be fine with a day or two notice. I've made a reservation there, and I believe Terry & Donna (Meridian)also have. The downside is the .6 mile walk from the Municipal Marina downtown to the Lodge.

The Municipal Marina does not take reservations as they are rarely needed, according to the Chamber of Commerce staffer I spoke with. He did virtually guarantee that there would be no problem having space for our group. Just incase something crazy and historic takes place I checked with Beaver Island Marina, they also expect plenty of space being available that weekend.

The current plan is to launch in Charlevoix at the ramp next to the Ferry Beach Park early Saturday and head straight to the Island, hopefully by 10:00 AM. Once we're at the Island we can check in at the Marina and make lunch plans. Terry posted some information about some afternoon trips we can consider. For Sunday our plan is roughly the same, a relatively early start for our return trip. The Shamrock reportedly serves breakfast now, evidently a new development that may come in handy for us.

Hoping for a big group,

We're still interested. We'd be staying aboard at whichever marina has "facilities".

Still maybe. We just got back from 10 days at our place in the UP. We had one and a half days without a Storm Warning, or Gale Warning, or Small Craft Advisory. Last Tuesday and Wednesday we had wind at 30 knots with gusts to 50.

As of right now Kathy and I are planning on going, leaving St. Ignace mid-morning Saturday. Weather looks real good, a bit cool, but calm.

Our call sign is "Walkabout".

Weather permitting my wife Karen and I are planning to come across from Door County on Saturday and stay till Monday or Tuesday. Current plan is to stay at Beaver Island lodge.

Look forward to meeting all who attend.

Mary and I are still planning on making the trip, weather permitting. We'll be in Charleviox Friday, leaving for Beaver hopefully by 10:00 or 11:00 AM Saturday. We have to return, again weather permitting, fairly early Sunday for some plans in Petoskey. Our plan is to stay at the Beaver Island Lodge.

Very disappointed yesterday to see the T word pop up in the Saturday forecast. Same word just popped up for Sunday, wasn't there when I checked earlier today.

Our call sign is Sunshine.

Three boats from three different directions, cool.

Hoosier, ECTR,

As of 5:00 Friday the forecast has fallen apart enough that we're not likely going to be making the trip. The 1 to 2 footers were changed to 1 to 3, then just changed to 2 to 4 for Saturday and Sunday. 15 to 20 knot winds out of the northeast would make the 30 mile return trip on Sunday fairly unappealing. It seems that the chance or slight chance of thunderstorms is the best thing about the forecast.

On the bright side we had one of our best days ever on a smooth as glass Lake Charlevoix after the fog on the big lake changed our plans for a lunch trip to Harbor Springs. Made it to East Jordan and Boyne City in the same day, never done that before in a boat.

Hope the weather ends up better than the forecast and you guys have a great time.

We are going to postpone our trip today.

Awoke this morning at 5:05 to a crackling sound, looked out the window and my truck was burning 10 feet from the cottage. We dragged it away from the house and were able to get the fire out just as the Gibralter fire department arrived.

The good news is the boat is fine.

Craig - sorry to hear about the truck. Also happy there was no damage to the boat, your cottage, or your family.

I wonder if David and Kathy made the trip.

Sounds like a close call, I'm happy to hear that your family & you are safe and that cottage & the whaler are out of harms way also.

Pat and Kevin,

Good to hear from you guys, I hope all is well.

Yes it was a fortunate set of circumstances that prevented this from being more than just a totaled truck.

We were looking forward to visiting your side of the lake, maybe we can hook up on the MI shoreline this season, we will have the boat in Door County this summer and are interested in planning another crossing.

Wow others stated that could have been a whole lot worse. Glad you caught it in time.

If you want to head over let us know. I am in Frankfort in a lot during July, August and most of September. If you wanted to we could try and meet out in the Manitous...I am trying to work something out for an overnight along the eastern shore of South Manitou this summer.

Well, we believed the marine forecast on NOAA Weather Radio and made the trip.
NWS: east winds 15, waves less than 2 feet
Reality: winds 15-25, waves 2-4
Transit time 2 1/2 hours. Speed 20-24

NWS: east winds 15, waves 1-3
Reality: east winds 15-25 (again, but this time it was in our faces), waves 2-4 (and a couple of 5-6 thrown in for fun).
Transit time 4 3/4 hours. Speed 8-10.

Beaver Island was nice, we'd go again (by air)...

Hoosier, I was amazed at the difference between the Sunday forecast I was hearing all day Friday and Saturday on the VHF vs. the open lake forecast I was seeing on From your observations it sounds like the website pretty much nailed it, other than those 5-6 foot fun providers. I'm going to stop mentally kicking myself now for not getting there. Glad you made it there and back.
