Tampa passed a law banning alcohol on Beer Can. Looks like no more GCBWOA rendezvous there!

Are they also going to change the name to 'No Beer Can Island"?

That's news to us that are out there every weekend. There is another smaller island 4 mile's north that we go to due to the crowd at big beer can (Pine Island on the books ), the small island is called Fantasy Island by a few, most just call it little beer can.

All of our Gulf Coast Whaler trips have remained in the Alafia River the past few year's as we have many 13s.

I would like to expand the trip's out into the bay but the river has plenty of fun going on. Three pubs and the fresh water springs up river.

Coming out of the Alafia big beer can is about 4 miles south and small beer can is 2 miles north.

Also Nick owns the Longboat Key beer can down the coast about 30 miles.

Is anyone planning an Alafia this year? Is so/not what time of year does it normally happen? Thanks,

Well that clears it up..) Yes J727 we do that each year in the fall around Oct. I think.
Nick is the boss on the dates. Dates will be posted a few months ahead of time and it is a really great day trip.
Just show up at the ramp around 10ish and out of the water around 6pm. It gets better each year. Check the site search for the video that Mice made of the Alafia trip last year, or maybe someone can link it up.

BTW did I meet any of you guys at the Homosassa Meet this past April? Anyway, I'm in Tierra Verde, and can be over there in a blink, if you all do go to beer can every weekend, can you describe the exact spot? And about what time/day? I'd love to head out there.

J727 On your map is Hy. 41 crossing the Alafia river, that is where the boat ramp is. Coming out of the river and going south is Big Beer Can also known as Pine Island , the small spot at the bottom. It is about a 1/4 mile long and gets very busy during the summer, wall to wall boats and people.

The smaller island is the one to the north and is used mostly by us locals that live along the river and is much more laid back.

If you go east at the boat ramp you will find three pubs on the south side of the river. All have live music and food and all are a little bit different from each other.

If you continue farther up the river about 4 miles in the slow zone you will hit the fresh water spring. The river continues for 30 miles or more but the springs are about as far as most go. All of the spots will be busy on the summer weekends but during the week days and cooler months it is very calm.. Fishing is also great ,just not on weekends. Hope to see you over here.

They have had it banned for years. You need to keep it in a cup or coozie or have your feet in the water. No biggie, been this way for about 8 years.

I think the Long Boat Key "beer can" island is the one that has been banned from having beer. Not the island inside Tampa Bay.
