We decorated Namequoit for the lighted boat parade that will be held in Santa Cruz Harbor on Saturday, December 7 at 5:30 p.m. If you are in the area, come on down and enjoy a great holiday event.

Here's a photo from last year's winning entry: 468503_10151284257909687_238824001_o.jpg

Here's a few links with details on the event:

Good luck, Andy. Based on your posting time, your were up
late decorating.

Me, I'll be listening to the Stanford-ASU Pac-12 Championship
game (aka, who's gonna go to the Rose Bowl?).

One of our favorite traditions over the last few years has been the Santa Cruz Lighted Boat Parade. Every year the competition gets better and better, so naturally I had to up the ante and add more lights, features and holiday spirit. This year, the theme of the parade was Holiday Circle of Lights - Ride the Wave. In the two out of the 3 years that we've taken a prize, sticking to the theme was key, and I figured this year would be no different. As you can see, we had circles of light, and naturally we also had Santa riding the wave. We had a great dock party before the parade, with plenty of hot toddies, finger food and baked goodies. A lot of friends came by to share in the cheer and wish us well in the parade. At about 5:15, I fired up the outboard, unplugged the shore power and put all the lights on the inverter. I worked like a charm and we were easily one of the brightest boats in the parade. 1458611_10152057737479687_1652832191_n.jpg 1484209_10151764116355919_1642764420_n.jpg

It was a cold night, with temperatures in the low 30's, but we bundled up and everyone stayed warm. The wind that had been howling all day laid down just before the parade, leaving a calm, glassy harbor for the festivities. The local radio station did a broadcast of the event, and they had a PA system at Aldo's so you could hear the remarks made for each boat as they passed by. Each captain was interviewed prior to the parade, so they had some nice details about each entry, boat and crew.

After the parade there was an awards party at Santa Cruz Yacht Club. The bar was open and serving inexpensive drinks, and the kitchen was pumping out hot clam chowder and chili. A slide show of the event was going in the background as the Commodore and MC'd the awards. Various restaurants, vendors and businesses in and around the harbor donated some very nice prizes which were given away for the various categories. We were thrilled to win the prize for Best of Theme, and the whole family came to the front with me to accept our honor. We won a pair of tickets for a cruise on the sailing yacht Chardonnay, and dinner at Johnny's Harborside Cafe. It was a lot of work putting this year's display together, but it was a lot of fun too and it was nice to see that the judges appreciated it. It was a great night and a good start to the Christmas season.
