From your picture, it is unclear to me how your thwarts are being retained. My concern with that setup is that the thwarts could depart if not secured (e.g. when being trailered at 65 MPH).

With that setup how do you fasten the bitter end of the anchor rode to the boat?

Thank you for describing your experience and offering advice based upon it. The tongue jack for my boat trailer was made by Dutton-Lainson Company of Hastings, Nebraska, and it has given me great service. It was old when I got it 25 years ago and it still working well.

The [1970 boat] has profoundly serious hull damage, and the [1974 boat] has been thoroughly trashed over many years. The asking prices in both cases are absurdly high. That's my opinion.

I did similar with my 1966 13-foot Sport, mounting the fuse panel under the console. It's absurdly over-engineered, but oh, well.

My guess is that someone used steel wool on or around the non-skid deck. The addition of saltwater "enhanced" the visibility of the tiny steel fragments.

I favor the location your boat originally used, under the helm seat. My second choice would be in front of the console, if that installation is well executed. I am leery about having the fuel tank in any sort of enclosed space where explosive fumes could accumulate, especially if a battery is locate...
