Taking the plunge: Bye-bye Bottom Paint

Postby StormWarning » Mon Nov 07, 2016 3:32 pm

Well, finally taking the plunge and removing my boat's bottom paint. The hull came with the paint on already and it was in poor shape. I guessed what type of paint it was, and and tried to touch it up. I guess I guessed wrong because the new paint didn't stick. A few months went by and the new stuff was almost all gone.

Day one in the books. First chemical stripper which took off maybe half of the paint. Then I tried acetone--hoping it is VC17--and that works but SLOWLY. Now using the 6-inch sander with 150-grit. That seems to be going fast, but I quickly ran out of sandpaper. Either way, I got off enough paint to get a picture of what she will look like with the all paint off and I'm loving it.

Re: Bye-bye Bottom Paint and Lawn, too

Watch out for that golf-course-quality lawn adjacent to your driveway. Anti-fouling bottom paint inhibits plant growth--and that includes the typical lawn grasses.
