Thanks for the data on production epoch. To 2020 from 2003 is a span of 18-years. That is quite a long production run without any changes.
For a comparison, the 170 MONTAUK appeared in 2002 and was in production to 2017, a span of 16 years. A
revamped model 170 MONTAUK was introduced in 2018.
I am surprised the 190 OUTRAGE had a longer run than the 2002 170 MONTAUK.
I now have another speculation about end of production for the 190 MONTAUK:
Making a hull mold for a Boston Whaler Unibold hull is a very expensive process due to several factors:
- molds must be very strong and heavily reinforced to contain the pressure of the expanding foam injected into the space between hull and liner;
- molds must be of the highest quality to maintain the fine details of the hull, liner, and deck surfaces associated with Boston Whaler boats
- molds are usually made from a plug, and if the plug is not in pristine condition, a new plug may first have to be made to make a new mold.
Investing in a new hull mold may have represented too great a cost compared to the amount of revenue Boston Whaler may have projected as future sales of that model. Also, plugs and molds are made by a specialized group of elite craftsman, who may have already had a backlog of work on molds for other models, possibly new models.
Perhaps Boston Whaler decided that before investing in a new mold for the 190 OUTRAGE they would give the model a revamped design, bringing it up to date and more in line with other recent designs, rather than just remake the old tooling for the 2003 model.
