Montauk 17 with used E-TEC 115-HP

I've been searching for [engines to use to repower a MONTAUK 17] but the market for them around Atlanta is awful. I did find a 2008 E-TEC 115-HP 20-inch shaft with 175 hours, and it has never seen salt water. It includes cables. The asking price is $7,500.

What is a reasonable price for a 2008 E-TEC 175-HP engine as described above?

I am tempted to buy the E-TEC 115-HP engine described above, as there are so few other engines available.

Make sure your insurance company is OK with overpowering the boat with a 115-HP. Most c.1980 MONTAUK 17 are rated for a maximum of 100 HP.

The E-TEC 115 at 375-lbs weighs about 55-lbs more than an E-TEC 90 at 320-lbs. An engine weight of 375-lbs is a lot for a classic 17-foot hull.

The weight of the 115-HP is fine. The 115-HP engine weight is within what the transom can easily handle and still float at a good height. Plenty have done it.

I don't want a heavy four-stroke-power-cycle engine.

I agree that with the MONTAUK 17 boat the engine weight is a major factor, but the E-TEC 115 isn't overly heavy.

I know of plenty of overpowered boats. Going to 115-HP instead of 100-HP is not severely over the rating. I will carefully read the insurance policy.

Give me comments about the E-TEC 115-HP used engine price of $7,500

If you think a product you want to buy is overpriced make an offer. When buying an expensive product negotiation is often the way to pay less than the "asking" price. "Consumer Reports" magazine recommends negotiating the price for any high priced item be it new or used. If you think the engine is worth $5500 an offer around $5000 could be a good first offer.

With new Covid cases reaching 500,000 a day after 22 months, I highly doubt the new and used engine market is going to recover significantly in the next 12 to 18 months.

That said, buy the E-TEC 115 with controls.

Have it programed for XD-100, install it three holes up (all the way) and install a 13-7/8 x 19 BRP Viper prop.

Have an E-TEC dealer [connect to the engine EMM to see the engine history]. I am assuming the engine not on a boat available for a test run.

If you have decided about the weight and decided about exceeding the horsepower rating, there is no point in any further discussion of those topics.

The only decision left for you is the price you will pay, and that is entirely up to you. If you like the engine, buy it at a price you like, whatever it might be.

A 115 ETEC at 375-lbs is a LOT of weight for a classic 17 Boston Whaler hull. I would be concerned. The best current outboard for that hull is a F70 Yamaha at 247-lbs. The ideal classic Yamaha 90 2-stroke (if you can find one) is about 260-lbs. New F90 Yamaha is 353-lbs.

My neighbor has a classic Montauk with a 2006 Honda 90 on it, it weighs about 375-lbs. the boat is low in the stern for sure but it works great in Mahone Bay and in the Atlantic Ocean. Lighter is better but 375-lbs works fine.
