A Boat For Large New England Lakes

Postby Jtowne500 » Mon Feb 20, 2023 9:41 am

I may buy a Boston Whaler 2005 210 OUTRAGE with aMercury VERADO 200-HP. The primary use will be in large lakes in New England, like Lake Champlain in Vermont and Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Less often the boat might be used in coastal waters on the Atlantic Ocean. The expected minimum crew will be two adults and one child, but perhaps six total aboard at times.

What other [model of Boston Whaler] boat that would cost about $30,000 would be useful for this same sort of boating?

The 210 Outrage will be well suited to these lakes and the occasional nearshore use as you describe.

The mention of a dollar figure of $30,000 associated with a 2005 210 OUTRAGE boat with VERADO 200-HP engine prompts me to infer that the boat is available at or near that price. I was initially surprised by how low that asking price was. For me, a model-year 2005 Boston Whaler seems like a rather late-model, but on further reflection I realize that a 2005 boat is indeed now 18-years-old, and not altogether as new as I initially thought. I looked at some 2005 210 OUTRAGE boats for-sale at a big on-line boat selling website, and $30,000 does now seem like a reasonable price, perhaps a bit below market.

Regarding the VERADO 200-HP, I offer this advice: if the VERADO is also a 2005 model, then it is probably a first-generation inline six-cylinder engine. The inline six-cylinder VERADO engines are remarkable devices. They are extremely quite, have no vibration, and run very smoothy. The only deficit they have is a thurst for gasoline fuel when operated at high throttle.

If the VERADO 200-HP engine is a more recent model, it could be the smaller displacement four-cylinder 200-HP version. These are also good engines, but they do not have the inherent balance of an inline six-cylinder engine, do not have balancing shafts often used with in-line four-cylinder engines, and do not seem to be as quiet or as smooth as the inline six-cylinder engines. Otherwise they are fine engines, just not quite as exceptional as the six-cylinder models.

As for what other models of Boston Whaler boat would be suitable, I have no idea to what use you plan to put the boat. To get better advice you must inform readers what you plan to do with the boat. Are you an angler? Do you want to tow water skiers? Do you want to overnight on the boat? Do you just want to go for boat rides for an hour or two?

If you are comfortable towing it, the Outrage 210 is a great hull.

It will be great when running Lake Winn or Champlain in the high season.

Alternative contenders include:

1993-1998 Outrage 21
2007- 2013 Dauntless 200
2000-2006 Dauntless 220.

These models handle well and have more seating options and is very comfortable for cruising.

Prices remain high despite a down turn in demand and increased inventory. The Fall/Winter is the best time to buy.

For warm-weather use with swimming off the boat or other activities with people in the water and re-boarding the boat from the water, the low freeboard in the stern of these older 220 DAUNTLESS boats makes them very attractive. They also have great seating. And I love the lines on these models.

I also think that inside that large center console there may be a day head.

I should add I recommended this model since it was present for the Lake Winnipesaukee Whaler Gathering I organized in 2004.

George and Kristina loved the boat and it was easy to see why. It was a great day.

[A boat only identified as] that does sound like a good choice.

ASIDE: in 2021 I rented a Newport 16 on Lake Champlain, and it was a fine ride depending on where you were; we stayed just north of Burlington.

I have operated a SPORT 13, a SPORT 15 and an OUTRAGE 21 (ribside) on Lake Winnipesaukee and Cape Cod.

The 21 was great--of course, [but note that the deadrise angle of the hull and its rounded bottom are] flatter than newer 21-foot Boston Whaler boats.

You must be be careful on the Cape.

The SPORT 13 bounced you around, and the SPORT 15 is a blast--depending on your needs and conditions.

I believe that both FIgure 1 and Figure 2 are showing the c.2006 220 DAUNTLESS. It is helpful to refer to the boat by its model designator when mentioning the boat in endorsements.
