13-foot Hull with Bronze Plate on Bow

Postby lakere » Thu Jul 06, 2023 2:51 pm

I may buy an older 13-footer. This hull has a small bronze or brass plate on the starboard side of the bow.

[Imputed question Q1: is a small brass or bronze plate on the starboard bow deck typical for an older 13-foot hull?]

Having some sort of metal plate fastened to the deck at the bow of an older 13-foot hull is atypical in my experience.

The metal plate appears inscribed with a number. What is the number?

The plate is inscribed "4100".

I cannot infer any particular association or correlation with the number 4100 and an element of a 13-foot Boston Whaler hull. On that basis, the reason for installing the plate and its significant are unknown to me.

Thanks for looking into this as I am brand new to these Whalers.

But the hull interior had a lot of previous paint on it and we decided to strip some of it prior to flipping here over.

The paint was removed in the anchor locker to reveal 4589, so the bronze plate remains an enigma, but not needed as the serial number was uncovered.

Thanks again.

The number you have uncovered is called the hull stencil number. See the REFERENCE article on the 13-foot hull for a listing of stencil number ranges and years of production.

ASIDE: I infer you bought the boat. Congratulations on buying a classic c.1961 Boston Whaler.

Thanks Jim. Yeah I bought the boat about a month ago and it is in very bad shape. This is my first Whaler and this site will definitely be a good resource to get it restored (it'll be for my grandkids).

I currently am building a 24' crabbing skiff (cold mold) in the garage and expect that to be completed late fall. Then I will pull the Whaler in.

From the initial assessment:
- Waterlogged hull
- 2 holes in the deck
- Probably 6 separate hull cracks/punctures (4 previously repaired and some repairs failing) and 2 relatively new fiberglass punctures.
- 2 areas of hull delamination.
- Transom looks/feels surprisingly solid

I think the general repair strategy will be do the local puncture repairs on the hull, then do a layer of 1208 or 1708 over the outside. Then flip back over and pull the soggy foam out.
