1988 SPORT 13 Navigation Lamp

Postby Kovar » Sun Jan 21, 2024 9:22 am

Q1: what is the proper [i.e. original or OEM] [combined sidelight navigation lamp] for a 1988 SPORT 13?

Read about OEM Navigation lamps at

OEM Sources and Recommend Vendors

Typically the standard equipment for a SPORT 13 would not have included navigation lighting. The presence of electrical wiring at the bow as seen in Figure 1 indicates your particular boat most likely was manufactured with the option for navigation lighting.

The deluxe OEM installation would have been a combined sidelight lamp mounted on centerline at the bow and fastened above a similarly custom designed chock assembly. There may have been an option for a less fancy lamp to be used. So to decree exactly what lamp was once there will be difficult.

The circular wooden base looks odd to me.

Below I give a link to a possible replacement lamp:

The lamp seen in Figure 2 below was used on some modern Boston Whaler models.

ASIDE: be prepared to spend serious money for some modern LED navigation lamps. I recently admired a very beautifully made combined red-green sidelight lamp, but was stunned to discover it cost over $400. This exotic lamp had internal electronics which were said to compensate for any reduction in emitted light by the LED bulbs that might occur over time, and thus the lamp output would always comply with the regulations for minimum light intensity emitted. But $400 for a navigation lamp just seemed a bit too much to me.

Take a look at this section of the Parts pages of Nauset Marine.

If you have any questions, give their Parts guys (Jason, Justin, Derek) a call 508.255.0777

I called Nauset Marine and was quoted over $300 [for the OEM bi-color combined sidelights lamp used by Boston Whaler]. [The navigation lamp] certainly appears to be top quality, chrome over bronze, and for that price I hope it would be.

Specialty Marine has one in 316 stainless for $120.

I'll have to give [the decision on what bi-color combined sidelights lamp to buy] some thought after I catch my breath.

SM is overpriced and inferior quality.

Buyer beware!

That [bi-color combined sidelights lamp] is a gorgeous piece of jewelry. At $300 it would make a nice anniversary gift for an understanding spouse.

We are talking about a 13-foot open skiff that probably will hardly ever be underway in darkness.

Get the ATWOOD or SEADOG catalogue and pick a lamp that might fit and be more cost-appropriate.
