1968 Nauset Foam Removal
I Have owned my 1968 Nauset 16 since 2007. It had some prior deck damage that I repaired.
The NAUSET 16 was sitting lower and lower in the water last few years. I knew there was water in the hull, just not how much. Never had any problems on the water and I pushed it really hard for the 10 years.
I decided to garage the NAUSET and go to town [ that is, to begin repairs].
I've read many threads on foam removal, structure, whaler mold process, etc.
I started a website to track the entire process, the deck cutting, foam removal, replacement, etc. I hope it inspires whether I succeed or fail.
I am happy to answer any questions here as the journey progresses. Look forward to lively conversations. Website homepage is http://68whaler.com. You can track the journey for the month of October here http://68whaler.com/october

Thanks for stopping by. Stay tuned for sure.
Re: 1968 Nauset Foam Removal
Where are the pictures and narrative of the repair? I did not find any at the website linked above.

Just checked the site, it's there. Are you clicking October in the navigation?
Re: 1968 Nauset Foam Removal
No--I went to the URL you gave. I only see one picture. No narrative text.

Just want people to follow the journey, its a weekend hobby. [I] added some easy to use navigation to the home page and hope it helps.
Re: 1968 Nauset Foam Removal
I think it would be much easier for people to find your pictures and narrative of the repair if you mentioned the starting link as

Thanks for the perspective Jim. Updated my first post.

Please keep the website going - it's one of the best visual, step by step, instructional presentations I have seen. With that said I'm not sure I'm ready to jump that deep into the process! Enjoy!

Thanks! That is my goal. Looking forward to her 50th anniversary launch next summer. It was huge decision, but so far well worth it. Keep checking back.

Great blog, I find myself checking in every day to see how your are progressing!
Just purchased a 79 Montauk which needs a similar amount of work doing, what color are you going to paint her?

Thanks. Once I dove in there was no turning back. Have done lots of research. The paint product that will work best in my skill set and work area looks to be TotalBoat Wet Edge Topside Paint in Whaler Blue. Going with the same maker for Topside White and Blue bottom paint. Found a great product for the non-skid areas: it's called Softsand. Mixes with the paint or can applied separately then painted over. Thanks again.

What a great website - Thank you...took my 1965 hull out of the water yesterday and power-washed her. As I put her in the garage I realized she needs some major help as I have a spongy section near the battery in the rear and many holes that need repair. I don't think I am skilled enough to pull off all the work you are doing but very much appreciate your efforts. Especially important to me will be the materials used to prepare and repaint. Good luck with your project. My girl is drying in the garage over the next several weeks.

If she is sitting in the water at good level, just fix those holes as recommended and make sure no additional water gets in through the deck and enjoy boating. I certainly could have kept boating with mine but it was always on my mind about the actual amount of water that was in the foam and hull. I knew it was in there. My fuel mileage was getting worse, and it felt like I had three extra people in the boat with me all the time.
Thanks for the great feedback. I do intend to list everything I will be using to prep and paint. I've done my homework. Until now it's been all basics: sandpaper, epoxy glass filler, glazing compound, etc--and plenty of elbow grease. I know this is a huge undertaking, I'm feeling good about it, and I'm having fun. Thanks again for the positive vibes, best of luck. Stay tuned.

Update to my rebuild. Thanks to the few who appreciated the work and checked in. Proud to say I launched her in July, and couldn't be happier. It's 1968 all over again every time I'm out there. The stars may have been aligned for me, but don't ever let anyone tell you it can't or shouldn't be done. You can indeed bring an older whaler back to life. Mine will be around long after I'm gone.
