I'll be removing the destroyer type stainless steel steering wheel soon in order to replace the helm and steering cable. The wheel has five spokes, diameter at the bottom of the hub is near 4 inches and hub depth is near 2 1/2 inches.
I plan to buy an inexpensive puller, think Harbor Freight, for this one-time use. I assume a three leg puller with wider feet is preferable to spread the lifting load over a wider area.
I have been spraying the shaft to wheel interface with penetrating oil for the past two weeks so, hopefully, I won't damage the bottom of the hub during the removal.

Re: Need Puller Recommendations
Check tool rental stores. Possible to find a higher quality tool for same/less money.

Most auto supply stores will loan you a puller.

This two-leg puller worked for me:

Unless really corroded, your knees putting pressure and a tap of a hammer(with nut on) usually breaks it lose.
On my 24th Whaler. Currently in the stable: 86 18' Outrage, 81 13' Sport(original owner), 87 11' Sport, 69 Squall(for sale cheap).
