2003 Nantucket 190 Livewell Drain Repair

Postby Yuk » Fri Jul 14, 2023 12:46 pm

I need some guidance on repair of a broken or cracked live well drain on a c.2003 190 NANTUCKET

BACKSTORY
I have just purchased a 2003 190 NANTUCKET. I noticed the drain in the live well is cracked. Quick research tells me this was a known problem with these boats in the early years. How to repair and what part is needed are not clear to me.

Use JB Weld for Fiberglass/Plastic.

I just read through that link. It looks to be about the thru hull fittings and not the live well tank drain.

If you did not find the linked article about through hull drains to be helpful for your situation now, then, at the least, reading it will have put you on alert for what could be a serious problem in the future.

Highlighted section:

..an expedient repair to the container by using a stainless steel drain fitting with about 4-5"
flange and 1.5" elbow and hose barb. These are available through many plumbing supply stores. This drain is sealed with 3M 5200 or equivalent and performs quite well.

Aside: I remember reading this thread back in 2005 and discussing it offline with owners. I am officially old.

On 2017 I bought 2003 Nantucket 190, and I did not know about the live well [drain damage problem] until after I purchased the boat. When the well is used as a live well for bait, the well needs to be insulated and have recirculating water. Such use does not suit my needs, and I never gave [worry about the live well drain damage problem] much thought.

I just store lightweight items such as life preservers in [the live well]. The [walls of the live well] are almost translucent—that is how thin the material is.

[On my particular 2003 190 NANTUCKET the live well appears as if] someone put extra sealant around the bottom drain. I hope [the live well or the bottom drain] never breaks because [for me] the repair cost would [be greater than the value of the restored functionality achieved by the repair].
