16-footer Hull Paint Scheme

Postby RILEYMARX » Thu Aug 03, 2023 7:18 am

Q1: what was the original paint color scheme on a 1967 16-foot hull?

I plan to restore this 1967 16-footer to the original beauty she once was, I cannot find information on the hull color paint scheme. The current paint on her now is a black bottom paint, to white gel coat on the hull, and blue on the deck.

I would like to have the hull to be gel coat white with the deck staying blue. And the rub rail white.

The hull and deck colors are not paint; they are tinted gel coat resin.

As for the original color scheme, you should detail the outside gunwales and interior to remove the oxidation and bring back the reflection. Owners are shocked to see the color and visual improvement in compounding the boat.

If you wipe your finger on a surface and a white film is left on your skin start with "heavy duty" compound. Otherwise start with medium duty followed by a finishing product like Finessit II.

The gelcoat colors were custom to Boston Whaler and are not sold by many companies. Due to the hand mixing back in the day, there was a fair amount of variation and replacement gelcoat in the factory colors does not always match.

The hull gel coat c.1967 was white.

The deck gel coat color was blue, but over 55-years the hue won’t be the original hue.

If you want to make small repair in the blue gel coat, you will first need to wash, remove oxidation, polish, buff, and wax to see the original color.

Read the owner’s manual about bottom paint. See my html version at

You do not need a barrier coat if the boat does not remain perpetually in the water. A week or two in cold fresh water is okay. The hull will dry out on the trailer.

Anti-fouling bottom paint may not be needed unless you’re boating is in warm seawater where marine growth attaches in few days.
