C.1980 Outrage 25 200-HP

Postby Ltwhaler » Tue Oct 01, 2019 8:18 am

Would a single 200-HP four-stroke-power-cycle outboard engine be adequate power for a c.1980 OUTRAGE 25 notched transom boat?

The intended target boat speed is be 37 to 39-MPH and for the boat to plane properly and not struggle.

Advice based on first hand experience with an OUTRAGE 25 with a single 200-HP engine of four-stroke-power-cycle design is solicited.

I cannot offer any first-hand experience with a c.1980 OUTRAGE 25 notched transom boat with a 200-
HP four-stroke-power-cycle engine for maximum speed and ease of acceleration to hydroplane.

I can point to the specification by the boat builder that the minimum power to reach plane is 115-HP.

Thanks for the link but I've already about worn out that page looking and researching and double checking.

A corollary: my REVENGE 22 W-T WD is the same length as an OUTRAGE 25 notched transom boat, but with a narrower hull that may be harder to plane. It is at least 600-lbs lighter, so perhaps a bit unsuitable for direct comparison. With 225-HP it jumps on plane and goes 44-MPH when light and in favorable good conditions.

Q: Which 200-HP engine are you specifically thinking about?

Suzuki 200. I believe they are large displacement four-cylinders

Your description is ambiguous. There are several SUZUKI engines available at the 200-HP rating. Some are V6 3.6-liter engines, which would be considered large displacement, and others are L4 2.87-liter engines, which are not considered large displacement.

Please disambiguate the particular SUZUKI 200-HP engine you are considering for powering the OUTRAGE 25.

200's are 4 cylinders. 2.9 liters I believe. " DF200A is an "In Line" four-stroke outboard is packed with technology. This four-stroke engine has large displacement, lots of torque and plenty of power"

V6's start at 225.

The Suzuki DF200 is a V6 3.6-liter engine. The DF200A is an L4 2.87-liter.

Which one were you planning to use?

Did they make the 25 in 1979? If so the 1979 brochure was the last year they posted performance numbers with the max and min hp. I would think I would want the larger displacement engine if going with a 200. The difference of a 200 vs 225 would be minimal in my opinion.
On my 24th Whaler. Currently in the stable: 86 18' Outrage, 81 13' Sport(original owner), 87 11' Sport, 69 Squall(for sale cheap).
