Montauk 170 Refresh
Montauk 170 Refresh
I have heard rumors of a pending refresh of the Montauk 170. Does anyone have any info on this ? Should I be concerned if I plan to purchase a 2016 shortly? I'm inclined to think a refresh might be more costly, but who knows.
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
Don't know about it but I do know the price will go up as it always does with a re-designed model and it also will be "better?" but that is to be seen. Wait for the new one to come out and get a discount on the new 2016 which is a great boat by itself.

Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
This 170 montauk design is introduced in 2002 and at 14 years is whaler oldest production hull at the plant. I spoke with Chuck from whaler customer service this morning ( called about something else for my boat ) and asked about new 170 coming out. As expected he wasn't willing to open his cards but he never denied new hull coming out so that is pretty good sign that where there is a smoke there will be a fire. Regarding pricing of brand new model its different than expected . When new hull is introduced Whaler will price it quiet aggressively and most of the time below last year prices to boost sales of new model.Boat shows will be the best place to lock the deal since whaler would like to book couple hundred hulls on order to keep factory busy. With a time those prices will creep up to catch up with market and other model pricing to become more profitable for a company.
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
In 2002 the 170 MONTAUK came out; it was much less expensive than the classic MONTAUK 17--it was thousands less. That more or less assured the new model would greatly outsell the old model, which was then soon dropped.
Boston Whaler has learned that new models bring new customers. After 14 years everyone who wanted a 170 has probably already bought one or will get a used one.
Good rumor--let's see what happens this Fall.

Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
Thanks for the input. My wife and I are long time sailors who have retired from cruising and plan to purchase our first power boat for fishing, swimming from, and light cruising on New Hampshire lakes. My wife fell in love with the Montauk 170 so we have planned to purchase one at the Boston Boat Show in February, 2017. We will be heading out on a sea trial on Lake Winnepesaukee on Saturday, September 10 with the dealer. If there is a new, less expensive model introduced in the fall that will be fine. If not, I think we will be perfectly happy with the boat as it is now.
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
For what it's worth, my dealer just took delivery of 2 new 2017 Montauk 170s and they have not changed yet. Personally, I would not be willing to delay purchase until spring, 2018 to get a newer model. Being new to power boating, I think I would be fine with it as it is. We are in our mid 60s and retiring so having the latest thing is less important than getting on the lake in 2017.
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
I heard that it will come out as a 60th anniversary model. I also heard that it will have an internal gas tank. We will see.
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
Clay, they're really nice boats, and I'd think a Montauk 170 would be just about perfect for NH lakes - small enough to handle and trailer easily, big enough to deal with occasional rough water in the more exposed areas. I've had my 15 on Squam and it's great but it feels like it would be a little small for Winnipesaukee.
If it were me, I'd spend time looking for a well-kept older hull and put a new motor on it - the big, black Mercs look monstrous on the transom. In doing so you'd save some money, and get your choice (not Whaler's choice) of motor.

Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
Flymo--thanks for the input. I did look around a bit for good used ones. They hold their value so well that the prices are very high, and most have older motors and trailers. By the time I bought the boat and upgraded the engine and trailer it just seemed to make more sense to buy new.
As for the Mercury engines, I have no problem with them and have owned several in the past on dinghies, and they were fine if properly maintained. The new FOURSTROKE models are smooth, quiet, and lighter than the competition. Most people who complain about Mercury have experiences with the older carbureted models. Owners of the newer ones seem very happy with them.
I found the same thing with people who put down or complain about Whalers--they are just repeating something they heard or have never owned one.
Most of our cruising will be at moderate speeds on Lake Sunapee and Spofford Lake, but we hope to explore others like Squam, Newfound, Winnesquam, Winnepasaukee, and maybe Sebago in Maine.

Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
Any new rumors on a refresh?
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
Haven't heard anything but decided I don't really care. Bought a 2017 Montauk 170. I am 65 and retiring soon so don't want to wait for next year. Don't know what they could do to improve it much anyway....I really like it as it is. Maybe something like internal fuel tanks which I don't care about.

Where did this info leak from ?
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
The 170 MONTAUK was first shown in 2002, or 15-years ago. At that time its dimensions were:
170 MONTAUK
Length = 17-feet
Beam = 6-feet 10-inches
If we add the suggested increments in length (4-inches) and beam (5-inches), a new model--let's call it a 175 MONTAUK--would then have dimensions of:
175 MONTAUK
Length = 17-feet 4-inches
Beam = 7-feet 3-inches
Now we compare a 175 MONTAUK to the classic OUTRAGE 18 hull:
OUTRAGE 18
Length = 18-feet 6-inches
Beam = 7-feet 2-inches
The refreshed 175 MONTAUK would then be wider than the OUTRAGE 18 and just a little over one-foot shorter.
The addition of a 25-gallon internal fuel tank would be an improvement. The MONTAUK boats have always used on-deck fuel tanks, ranging from twin 6-gallons tanks up to 20-gallon or larger tanks. A 25-gallon tank would be (in most cases) an increase in fuel volume, and the internal tank would free up deck space and rigging clutter. With modern engines having excellent fuel efficiency, a 25-gallon fuel capacity today would be the equivalent of about a 40-gallon fuel capacity for a c.1980 MONTAUK 17 with a conventional two-stroke-power-cycle engine with carburetors.
Making the 175 MONTAUK longer, wider, and adding a fuel tank will certainly increase the cost of production. In 2002 the introduction of the 170 MONTAUK was done with a substantially lower price than the boat it replaced, the classic MONTAUK 17. I suspect that a 175 MONTAUK will have to have a higher price than a 170 MONTAUK, unless Boston Whaler plans to reset the price structure and gives the new model a lower-than-normal introductory price to spur adoption by customers in its initial year of production.

Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
There is speculation in this discussion, and there is no harm in that.
Consumers today always want the new model--of every product. People with an iPhone 6 will get an iPhone 7 just because they want the new model. The 170 MONTAUK is a 2002-model trying to compete with 2018 models from other boat builders. Dealers need entry-level boats to sell to new boaters. Why not have a 2018 175 MONTAUK to offer them?

Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
What does the competition offer in a 17-foot center console that might be attractive to a new boater? Let's look at the SCOUT 175 SPORTFISH:
Length = 17-feet 5-inches
Beam = 7-feet 5-inches
Fuel tank = 28-gallons
Hey--the 175 SPORTFISH is just about the same size as the speculative 175 MONTAUK and has an internal fuel tank. And the MSRP is $25,495, with a Yamaha F90 and a trailer. That sounds like a competitive boat, and if compared to the present 170 MONTAUK, the SCOUT is longer, wider, and has an internal fuel tank.

[The speculative new model 175 MONTAUK] base boat MSRP is about a grand higher [than the current 170 MONTAUK]. The upgrade [to a] Mercury 115 [FOURSTROKE Command Thrust] is $990
Also:
--fish box is just aft of the anchor locker
--a teak package is available
--gel coat covered hull full or side only
Maximum speeds:
--with standard 90-HP = 40-MPH
--with optional 115-HP = 46-MPH

Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
If this info is secret, could you give us ballpark of a date or month when this redesigned legend will be coming out public?
If Boston Whaler decides to have below-deck [fuel] tank on 17 MONTAUK, I think it would be a mistake. Many buyers bought gazillion 17 was ease of handling [fuel] tanks .

I heard it from two people. One was a Boston Whaler rep and the other was a major whaler dealer who was asked to participate in a info gathering session regarding what changes they would like to see on the 170 Montauk. They may have mentioned 50th anniversary, not 60th. I forget
Anyway, talking and speculating is what makes forums like this interesting; certainly nothing to get all worked up about.
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
Cannot actually remember where I heard about a refresh....it was awhile ago. My local dealer has 2018s on order with no mention of change. That said, very disappointed that someone on this forum would regard this topic as "stupid."
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
Well its here - they will introduce it tomorrow but you can see new Montauk 170 60th anniversary edition on whaler twitter page as they delivering boatloads of backpacks to kids in local schools with new model. Some changes are noticed immediately - rubrail has metal insert,some teak on gunwales,stern seat backrest design,old montauk profile etc.
Re: Montauk 170 Refresh
If you go to the Whaler site and 'build your Whaler' you can see pics. Nice upgrade. Looks like it does have a built in tank.
