I have a 1979 Montauk that I restored in 2001 with a lot of help from those on this site. Had it on Cape Cod, retired in 2014 to the Florida Keys and brought the boat with me. It's been great and bullet proof, but I've had two-foot (or more) itis for a while. This week the engine's charging system died, and it got real windy down here too, bad boating weather--although it is still 80 degrees.
It so happens that a couple of Keys over a 1986 Outrage was for sale and I bought it. The particulars: No bottom paint, recently installed 2005 Optimax 150 with 400 hours, new fuel tank, new controls, and new hydraulic steering, most wiring. Refinished wood with Cetol. Serviceable trailer, although not a trailer queen (which frankly would be a waste in the Keys).
So this is by way of introduction that--as with my old Montauk--I am going to have a lot of questions, and no place like ContinuousWave to get the scoop on Boston Whalers. So thank you in advance.
I pick the boat up tomorrow and the wind is supposed to die down Sunday. I have guests coming (we get a few in the winter--hah) but Monday I drop it in the water. Should be exciting; previous owner says it will do over 50--yikes.
Regards, Bob M.

The Outrage 18 is a great boat. I've had mine for 14 years now. Iceboats are using my home waters at this time.

An OUTRAGE 18 with 150-HP will be like driving a sports car. Have fun.
My new boat: 1986 Outrage 18
My new boat, 1986 Outrage 18, DOES have one of those suicide knobs on the steering wheel! Does an outboard go Vaaarooom?
Picked it up today. Previous owner spent over three hours familiarizing me with the boat. Nice guy.
Something I found interesting is the console has zero holes in it from mounting electronics. Only thing on it is the original compass.
It has a Boss radio utilizing Bluetooth and Raytheon WiFish for sonar that sends the info to a tablet for display. I will be looking for Ram suction mounts to keep the console virgin if possible.
Also I am planning to add a swim platform. Martin Marine looks like the one I guess.
Still blowing 30 knots here. Montauk and Outrage looking good in the front yard.

Congrats on the boat. I was about to make an offer on that one--small world.

Don't worry, the wind will die down in April for the most part. The best weather is when the foreigners leave and the sun gets hot.
Re: New, for me, 1986 18' Outrage
Congrats on your purchase. I chased after it for a while then turned my attention to the one in Key Largo, new tank, floor repaired for [$8,000 asking price]. It sold on Saturday before I could get there.
Yours is in great condition. Best of Luck

I was getting ready to order a console cover for my 1986 18 Outrage and it all of a sudden struck me that I may not have an original console. Below is a picture of what I have. Was this an original standard console, an optional console or from a larger Outrage?

Conch...that 22 in Tavernier for $7K looks like it has potential. No bottom paint, RPS, wood looks intact and been on a lift.

BOB--I left two messages for the OUTRAGE 22 and got no reply. I am really not a Mercury engine guy.
The OUTRAGE 18 I missed in Key Largo was as clean as yours, but with Evinrude 150-HP power. I was supposed to meet the seller on the weekend to wrap up the sale, and then received an e-mail it was sold. We had a little language problem on the phone so maybe I could have been clearer, I don't know. Most likely they got a better offer.
I now have three Boston Whaler boats: 15,17, and 27. My wife seems pretty firm that I would have to sell one if I buy another. I will probably sell my Sport 15 with 70 Johnson and new trailer by listing it here.
Let me know if you travel up here in the north @MM86 & Snake Creek area, or need to tie the boat up for the night.

The console you show is one of the last revisions of the standard size center console. It has a mounting pad for the engine shift and throttle controls that puts the top-mounting controls more or less at a level setting. Earlier versions had the mounting location for the controls on quite an angle. I think this version is the best--that's why it is the last revision.
Re: New, for me, 1986 18' Outrage
I went to order a console cover from Mills and sent Suzanne the picture above just to make sure it would fit. After review of the picture she said the console cover would NOT fit. Apparently when the helm was replaced and Baystar hydraulic steering installed the wheel is now more vertical then original. Too bad, I wanted a nice cover from Mills. Also I don’t much care for the nearly vertical wheel...Bob
Re: New, for me, 1986 18' Outrage
I enlarged your digital image and did some exposure compensation in order order to better see the helm mounting:
While not completely clear, it looks like perhaps a wedge-shaped bezel has been used to give some tilt to the axis of the steering wheel, making the axis just about horizontal. If there is a bezel involved in mounting that helm pump, you could change the orientation of the bezel so it tilted the axis upward instead of downward. That would:
--get rid of your objection to the present orientation being too horizontal (or as you describe, too vertical), and
--perhaps better fit with the canvas pattern from Wm. J. Mills & Co.
Or, you could get a bezel without any bevel, mounting the helm just normal to the panel, as probably was more like the OEM installation.
A clearer image of the mounting of the helm pump would be useful to resolve the ambiguity.
Also, that is a nice six-spoke wheel, probably a GRANT MARINE product.
