Verado Stalls
My 2006 four-cylinder Mercury VERADO 150 stalls when shifted to reverse. It runs perfectly in neutral and forward but stalls immediately when shifted to reverse. Smartcraft guage says system fault when stalled. Has anyone seen this?

Is the engine stalling or simply shutting down immediately when the DTS is placed in reverse? If the engine shuts down immediately it sounds like there could be an electrical problem. Electrical problems with ten year old Verados are not uncommon. The SmartCraft gauges sometimes show a fault code which can be translated.
Before taking your engine to a qualified technician carefully check all the electrical connectors in the DTS wiring to the battery and the engine. Loose or corroded connections seem to be at the heart of most Verado electrical problems followed closely by defective sensors.

Butch thanks for the response. I think i solved the problem, one of my passengers accidentally leaned on the engine trim switch for about 30 seconds which caused the Smartcraft trim gauge to read a false trim angle. I re-calibrated the trim gauge, and now have reverse again. That a confused gauge could cause a potential stranding sounds ridiculous--I know.

well it turns out i did not solve the problem. It has gotten worse. here is my current symptom list. engine shuts down when pounding in rough water while on plane. engine shuts down when shifting to reverse. smartcraft gauge sometimes reading hydraulic fault.

Current status: last week I was finally able to get my 2006 205 Conquest with 150 VERADO to a VERADO-certified mechanic. I picked her up Saturday. The technician said the problem was "poor connections on ECM." He charged $240 for the repair.
I went out the next day for test ride. The VERADO 150 FOURSTROKE ran fine for 15 minutes, then, when crossing a passing boat wake, the VERADO 150 FOURSTROKE engine shut off, with the Smartcraft gauge reading "shift actuator fault."
After that engine would shut off when shifted to reverse and Smartcraft gauge read "fault TPS, fault sensor and sensor power." The engine shut down several more times on the way back to the ramp. At one point without shutting down, engine speed went from 3/4-throttle to neutral with the throttle lever still in 3/4 throttle position.
The next day, Monday, I called shop, but they were closed. I hooked up the hose adaptor and started the 150 VERADO FOURSTROKE engine in my yard. To simulate hitting waves, I removed the engine cowling and jiggled and smacked all electrical connections. I shifted to reverse several times. I could not cause engine to shut down.
I did discover a loose positive terminal on battery-2, but wiggling and even totally disconnecting that battery lead did not cause shut down--even when shifting to reverse. I then firmly tightened all battery terminals.
I decided to go for another test ride. I ran her hard, stopping to shift to reverse often. I also chased a large tugboat and pounded through its wake several times. I ran the boat for over an hour and could not cause a failure of any sort.
What am I to do now?
