Whaler Drive Decals

Postby jimh » Thu Aug 22, 2024 5:10 pm

My 1990 REVENGE 22 W-T Whaler Drive boat is now 34-years-old, but almost all the decals on the Whaler Drive are still intact. This article will describe four decals that were installed at the factory pertaining to the Whaler Drive, a fifth mystery decal on the hull transom, and a cover plate.

The fourth decal is located on the center of the inboard face of the Whaler Drive transom and has been damaged. Perhaps this occurred when the center support bar was being removed by the dealer who rigged this boat with a single engine.

On the Starboard side of the hull transom there is also a decal near the wiring for the grounding or bonding electrode. This decal is no longer visible, and only a remnant of the decal backing material remains. I suspect that this decal probably advised to not disconnect the yellow conductor from the immersed electrode. Actually, the electrode was put in place on the hull before the Whaler Drive was added, so it is more or less impossible to get to this electrode now.

There is also an interesting circular cover plate on the Whaler Drive on center, which was apparently added when the rigging dealer removed the center support tube. This plate covers the hole where the support tube would have been attached through the Whaler Drive and into the hull transom.

After I took this photograph, I looked at the screw head slots and thought perhaps the fasteners were not tight. However, the three screws were all very tight. I believe this plate was installed in the field at the dealership where the engine was rigged on the boat. Because the boat was getting a single engine, the support tube for dual-engine rigging needed to be removed, and the hole covered with this plate. The installer at the dealership would have needed to drill the three holes for the three fasteners for the cover. As you can see, the holes drilled for the screw fasteners are not perfectly aligned with the holes in the cover plate. This is the reason I think this work was NOT done at the factory. (Also, my recent project of cleaning the Whaler Drive had not gotten around to brightening this cover plate, and that is why there is some surface irregularities on the cover.)
