Spray

by James W. Hebert

Many people, who apparently have never ridden on a Boston Whaler boat, often cite them as being a "wet boat." This short motion picture recording disproves that notion.

Boston Whaler REVENGE 22 Whaler Drive

The short movie below shows my 1990 Boston Whaler REVENGE 22 Walk-Through Whaler Drive being driven downwind at about 26-MPH in two- to three-foot following seas. The camera leans out over the gunwale to show the spray being deflected away from the boat. Sitting in the rear of the cockpit the ride was completely dry. Even holding the camera outboard of the gunwale there was no spray hitting the camera.

I know the waves look very small, but it is my experience that in photography waves always tend to appear substantially smaller than they really were. The Whaler Drive adds considerable stability to the ride, and as you can see the bow does not move up and down excessively as the boat rides over the wave tops.
