Big decision

Postby doberman1 » Sun Aug 30, 2020 8:59 pm

I just sold my 2014 170 Montauk with 90 HP with bimini top—a fantastic boat thatbheld its value incrediblly well. [The 170 MONTAUK s]old to first buyer in one day at asking price. I have declined several other offers that have come in subsequently. [The 170 MONTAUK w]as perfect boat for me, but with growing family of boys more than six-feet and weighing 200-lbs [the 170 MONTAUK] just got a bit tight these past two years.

[I am t]rying to decide what to upgrade to. [I lean] towards a 210 MONTAUK. [I am] open to sugestions for other models and similar sized Grady, Sailfish, Mako or Scout boat’s.

Q1: [Has ever an owner of a 210 MONTAUK] wished they would have gotten an Outrage or Dauntless or any other boat?

Q2: [Has the 210 Montauk something that owners] like?

Q3: Or dislike?

Q4: Or must have?

Q5: Does a Montauk 210 handle chop better than a Montauk 170?

Q6: Can the considerable premium cost differential over comparalble boats with substantially more features and included options be justified?

I may order a 210 MONTAUK with options
—Fiberglass top
—full rail package
—200 HP Black engine
—reversible seat
—7-inch display
—sun lounge
—white-black graphics
—cooler seat
—VHF Marine Band radio

Q7: should I order trim tabs?

Use will be bay cruising. On flat days I go offshore
15-miles to wrecks.

All [answers to questions,] comments, and suggestions are appreciated.

The 210 Dauntless is a sweet boat. I suggest adding it to your list of potential boats.

Keep in mind, used boat sale prices are atypically high right now due to the effects of COVID.

Moving to a Montauk 210 is a huge cash outlay for a small increase in ride quality. The Montauk 210 ride improvement is mostly due to additional LOA and weight of the hull rather than a different hull design.

The early 2000's Outrage 210 and 220 are worthy candidates and exhibit major improvements in ride over the Montauk series with a hull designed for offshore water conditions. The current Outrage 230 may be too large and/or out of your budget.

For boats over 20', trim tabs are a wise investment. The factory option, as many are, is very expensive and can be done after the order DIY.

You didn't ask but I believe a 190 Montauk would be a worthy candidate to replace your 170 Montauk. We owned our 190 Montauk for about 10 years and found it to be a fine boat in every way. The ride was fine except on unusual days. Ride is difficult to describe as one person's opinion will differ from that of another. Take a ride to know for sure but remember that a semi-V will not handle chop better than a deep-V hull in almost any circumstance. I doubt you would find the ride of any late model Montauk much different than that of your boat.

Trim tabs are unnecessary on a 190 Montauk. Engine trim adjustments are sufficient for compensating for changing sea conditions or loads. If you want tabs I recommend following Phil's advice and installing your own. Electric trim tabs are easily installed. I recommend installing your own electronics which is also easy and cost effective.

Buying a late model used Montauk of any size will save several thousand dollars.

Primary reason I'm not considering Montauk 190 is deckspace. We are big family and getting bigger (6'+ 200lbs+) and main reason for our upgrade is deckspace and abilty to get boat on plane in normal time. I like layout of Montauk's over other BW models. 210 has 9 pax capacity which is a major selling point for us.

You mentioned some other brands of boats. Have you looked at a Robalo R200. It's a nice boat with very high freeboard and laid out well. The swing open head design is great for easy access even if you only use it for storage. I know this a BW forum but that boat is one sweet ride that won't break the bank. The downside is the weight capacity of the Robalo is only 1200 pounds quite lower than the 2800 pounds for the Montauk 210.

Thanks - I did look at most others but keep coming back to the Montauk 210. Unfortnately the high sides/freeboard on most other brands in the 20 ft size class are a dealbreaker for us. Actually my neighbor has the Robalo 220 and they use a stepladder to climb in and out of their boat on our floating docks. We like the easy entry access of the Montauk and massive open deckspace it has. 99% certain the Montauk 210 is for us, we now just need to decide on what options want/need.

Before you spend $66,322 plus options, delivery, tax, dealer installed options and prep, try to find a local owner with a Montauk 210 and treat them to a dinner out in exchange for a short cruise.

I think you will thoroughly enjoy the 210 Montauk. We sold our 2006 170 Montauk when I found a 2015 210 Montauk for sale. We have had it for 4 years and don't regret the decision.

Our family is tall and includes a big lab. Plenty of room when we are all aboard but wish the bikini was taller. Comfortable at anchor and underway. We aren't out in the ocean very often but find it handles every condition better than our 170. If you can find a pre 2019 model I would go for it.

May I suggest a looking into a [D]auntless?

I, too, was going to order a new 210 [M]ontauk. I was convinced and at the point where I was going to put my deposit down—but the dealership didn't answer my phone call.

I took that as my sign and kept looking. I wasn't sure 210 was enough and just the little extra space on the 240 perfect. Plus the rear seat on the [D]auntless is in a different class than on the [M]ontauk. [A DAUNTLESS] is probably as friendly for fishing as a [MONTAUK] and [a DAUNTLESS has] more comfort.

I bought a used and a bigger boat for much less money.

Now I am more comfortable.

When you're ready to buy, pause for a second.

I live in Ohio. I drove to Florida to pick up [a boat].

If you are willing, don't let the convenience of keeping it local take your money.

Take the time and effort and get what you want. You sh

Check out the [D]auntless.

The 240 [D]auntless will be more comfortable and handle chop much better than the 210.

If you buy a used boat you will save.

Look for a pearl; you can't go wrong.

[The boat you will be buying] is a [Boston W]haler after all.

I decided to order a new Montauk 210 and will have it delivered in Spring 2021. We ordered the fiberglass T-Top and optional 200-HP engine. Other than that the boat is a bare 210 that I will customize.

We have loved our 170 but just ran out of space and power.

I don’t mind splurging on a new Boston Whaler boat since we bought our 170 new and just sold it for almost the price we bought it for in 2014.

We went out for our last run in the 170 before I turn it over to new owner. We ran around all day with seven aboard on relatively flat ocean. Coming back into our notoriously rough inlet with outgoing tide were five-foot rollers. I always felt 100% safe and in control.

I tell people the Montauk 170 is a ginsu knife of boats.

If the 210 is even close to the 170, I will be thrilled with my decision.
