420 OUTRAGE Repair Costs After Partial Sinking

A popular youTube presenter (https://www.youtube.com/@WillFixThat) who runs a marine repair business in the Florida Keys is in the process of repairing a 420 OUTRAGE rigged with four Mercury outboard engines that was disabled in some manner--not quite explained--and settled down by the stern in tropical saltwater, causing the cockpit main aft compartment that contains all the batteries, electrical rigging, pumps, generator, power steering pumps and hoses--a huge collection of rigging--to become flooded. The initial investigation found that one of the two bilge pumps which werre controlled by a float switches had no continuity through the switch. The source of the ingress of water has not yet been determined, but there is a suspicion that it was caused by a loose hose connection; with only one bilge pump operating, the rate of water inflow was too high to be overcome by one pump, and the compartment eventually flooded.

The initial repair cost estimate is already over $100,000 in parts, and labor (cost not yet mentioned) is estimated as two men for two weeks.

One problem already encountered was the replacement OEM pumps (for power steering operation of the four engines) have changed design, so re-fitting with the new-style pumps will require some re-routing of hoses and wiring.

I think the four engines may be the c.2020 VERADO in-line 6-cylinder models with a rating of 350 or 400-HP that weight about 700-lbs each.

The owner should be shopping for a new insurance carrier as there is a high likelihood the existing policy will be or has been canceled.

Perhaps a Bluetooth high bilge water alarm will be installed during the repair process.

On a corollary topic, here is a link to another youTube presenter who records his activity as a towing service operator, and is towing a 405 CONQUEST which has become disabled due to a lightning strike. There is no estimate of the repair costs given, but, again, due to the complexity of the electrical systems on a 40-foot modern Boston Whaler boat, I suspect the remedy will be very expensive.

One metric for the cost of yacht ownership is to expect annual cost for the yacht to be ten-percent of its purchase price. On that basis, a 420 OUTRAGE that sold for $1,500,000 and had a repair cost of $150,000 in one year might just be a normal outcome.
