Hi all. What is the deadrise angle on [the 2002 180 Dauntless and 2006 190 Outrage]?

The specifications are very similar for both [the 2002 180 Dauntless and 2006 190 Outrage].

Should we expect any significant differences in performance and comfort?

SPECIFICATIONS 180 Dauntless 190 Outrage

The deadrise angles should be available on the Boston Whaler websites.

As to performance, fifty pounds of weight and twenty horsepower shouldn't make much difference. However, you may want to compare the torque figures between the engines. In practical use I've found the 135 Verado to be particularly strong on our 190 Montauk. The acceleration across the RPM band is very impressive with the Verado. The Outrage with the Yamaha engine has, I assume, been repowered. There have been some serious and expensive to correct problems with some Yamaha exhaust systems recently. I recommend you look into that as part of your analysis.

Comfort is difficult to define. The Dauntless hull should be more stable due to less deadrise. The Outrage hull should be a little less bumpy in choppy conditions. For family boating the Dauntless layout (with optional seating) should be more accommodating. The Outrage layout should be better suited for hardcore offshore angling.

In the conditions most of us prefer for boating I doubt you would notice little if any difference in ride quality.

Finally, you should operate both boats before deciding which one more closely meets your requirements.

Using the data above for dry boat weight and horsepower, I calculated the lbs/HP ratios as

180 DAUNTLESS = 15.4-lbs/HP
190 OUTRAGE = 13.7-lbs/HP

Since the 190 OUTRAGE has a better (lower) weight-to-horsepower ratio, it should accelerate faster, assuming the hulls are generally similar.

Since the 2002 180 DAUNTLESS has a two-stroke-power-cycle engine while the 2006 190 OUTRAGE has a modern VERADO propulsion system, I would expect that the general user satisfaction with the engine will be greater with the VERADO. The VERADO propulsion system--it's not just an outboard engine any more--should be more fuel efficient (as long as you are not running it at maximum throttle), the control system will be electro-mechanical instead of mechanical, it will have digital instrumentation (although using a proprietary protocol that is not particularly easy to connect to generic displays), and exhaust gas emission, smoke, and soot should be lower.

We are talking about 18-foot boats with generally similar hulls, so I would not expect there to be an astonishing difference in the ride or comfort or seakeeping abilities of the hulls.

As JEFE notes, the layout of the two hulls is probably more influential. But I think both are center consoles. Here is an nice 2002 180 DAUNTLESS with added custom-fitted weather canvas:

The Dauntless is marketed as a lake or near shore vessel versus the Outrage which can handle near and off-shore.

The Boston Whaler website has very limited information for older model boats. While the deadrise of the two models is far from similar, I would contact Customer Service and ask. http://www.bostonwhaler.com/contact-us/.

What do you want to do, under what conditions and where will it be done?

Thanks all for your responses. I currently own the 180 Dauntless and am in contract to purchase the 190 Outrage. I just recently started looking at the 190 Outrages thinking that there would be some incremental improvement in performance over the 180 Dauntless. I truly love the styling and layout of the Dauntless but performance in the chop is more important to me than additional seating and storage.

I'll be using those boats for clamming, crabbing, fishing, bringing the dogs swimming, etc. I think the stern platform on the Dauntless makes loading the dogs back onto the boat a bit easier, and hopefully the Outrage's two additional inches of freeboard will help keep the mutts inside the boat :-)

I've never ridden in a 190 Outrage but it appears to be much larger inside than the 180 Dauntless, it looks deeper. They appear to have near equal square footage of cockpit space given the Dauntless's integrated stern bench versus the Outrage's larger console footprint.

I could not find dead-rise stats on the BW site so I called them and fortunately for them they are closed for the remainder of the year. I'll keep searching, thanks again.

As you can see in these pictures the 2006 190 Outrage has a deeper and sharper bow entry (Deeper V) that is carried farther aft than the 2002 180 Dauntless. The Outrage will have better sea keeping abilities than the Dauntless. While the Dauntless will have better stability than the Outrage at rest.

Wow--that 190 Outrage does seem to run deeper than the Dauntless. Thanks for taking the time to take the photos. admirable.
