Location of hull number on 13" 1961 Whaler

In c.2005 I bought a 13-footer at our summer place in Maine. [The—please use a capital letter to start a sentence] seller gave me his most recent Maine boat [registration—don’t invent abbreviations] which listed the hull number as 4218 and the build date of 1973. [The—please use a capital letter to start a sentence] town clerk in my town issued a new registration to me without question.

[Now—please use a capital letter to start a sentence] I'd like to bring the boat home to Indiana. [The—please use a capital letter to start a sentence] process here is to have a law enforcement officer inspect the boat and certify the hull number on a form which is necessary for registration.

[The—please use a capital letter to start a sentence] problem is that I can't find the hull number. I contacted Boston Whaler customer service. They said the hull number would be inside the rear transom wall about 2-3 inches from the bottom, as well as inside the anchor locker. I cannot find the hull number in either location. I assume the inside has been painted over one or more times, obscuring the hull number.

[In—please use a capital letter to start a sentence] the process of my research, I've learned that hull number 4218 would be no newer than 1961, not 1973 as the seller had listed on his registration.

[The—please use a capital letter to start a sentence] layout of my whaler is consistent with drawings I've found online of "first generation" 13-footers.

To anyone that has a 13-footer from the 1960 to 1961: tell me exactly where to look for the hull number.

I might try to carefully remove a layer or two of paint to try to find the number so I'm able to register it.

You have already been informed where to look for the stencil number. Painting over the stencil number is common. Very careful sanding away of the paint can reveal the stencil number. Read the FAQ for more advice as your question is a FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION (FAQ).
