Q1: What is the overall length of a 190 MONTAUK when the engine is tilted up?
Q2: What is the overall length of a 170 MONTAUK when the engine is tilted up?
BACKSTORY
I have a classic 17 Montauk. I may buy a larger Montauk. My boat is kept in the water behind my house at a neighborhood dock; the neighborhood dock has a length restriction of 21-feet with the engine trimmed up. I prefer a 190 MONTAUK.
Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
The overall length of the boat remains the same, as the boat length does not include the engine.
Are your neighbors really going to measure down to the inch?

Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
In determining LOA for trailer sizing, we use the length over all (LOA) of the hull plus two-feet for the engine in the horizontal position.
For the engine tilted out of the water, I would add two-feet more
170 Montauk = 21-feet 4-inches
190 Montauk = 23-feet 4-inches
For the engine tilted out of the water, I would add two-feet more
170 Montauk = 21-feet 4-inches
190 Montauk = 23-feet 4-inches

Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
I understand the length of the boat does not change, but I wasn't sure how much to add to the LOA with the engine cowling plus lower [unit] trimmed out of the water.jimh wrote:The overall length of the boat remains the same, as the boat length does not include the engine.
We have limited space at our neighborhood dock and if everyone is over the allowable size of 21-feet, we'll have a problem--and then the measuring tape will come out. I'm the board so it wouldn't look good if I wasn't complying with the rules.jimh wrote:Are your neighbors really going to measure down to the inch?

Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
Thank you. That helps. A 190 Montauk might not be doable, and I might have to focus on the 170 Montauk. But I'm not sure the 170 Montauk is that much bigger than my classic 17 Montauk to justify a new boat.Phil T wrote:170 Montauk = 21-feet 4-inches

Dang it, guys. You are supposed to help me justify new toys (haha).
Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
The 170 is a completely different boat that the MONTAUK 17.
The 170 MONTAUK has a significantly wider beam, 8-inches more than the MONTAUK 17. It feels VERY roomy with the narrower console.
The 190 MONTAUK is a big step up from the 170 MONTAUK. While it is two-feet longer, the hull is much larger.
Find a 170 MONTAUK owner and treat them to something, so you can walk around the boat and go for a short cruise.

Two-feet more doesn't sound like enough to me. The distance may also vary slightly for different engine brands.Phil T wrote:In determining LOA for trailer sizing, we use the length over all (LOA) of the hull plus two-feet for the motor in the horizontal position. If they are measuring the boat for compliance to the rule, guess-timates will not provide solid reassurance it will meet the requirement.
Whaler states for a 170 MONTAUK on trailer:
23-feet 6-inches x 8-feet 3-inches x 7-feet Package Boat Specs
(on trailer with engine up; reduction for swing tongue 2-feet 8-inches)
It'll be close.

Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
Mackey - I added two-feet to the two-foot-depth of the engine for a total of four-feet.
Should I pull my Outrage 17 out of the garage, tilt the E-TEC 90 up and measure?

Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
I think PHIL T was saying they add two-feet for the engine and two-feet when the engine is trimmed so four-feet plus the LOAdtmackey wrote:Two-feet doesn't sound like enough to me
I was guessing [the length with engine tilted up] would be around three-feet plus the LOA.
To your point: I posted in an attempt to get actual measurements instead of guess-timates, but any input is appreciated.
The local dealer does not have a 170 or 190 Montauk in stock otherwise I'd run down and measure myself.
Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
I pulled my boat out. Curiosity wins. Think: how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?
This is a 20-inch shaft E-TEC 90 engine. Measurement was from the top of the transom to the farthest point, the tip of the Viper 19 propeller.

Re: Overall Length with Engine Trimmed Up: 190 or 170 MONTAUK
You could save about two-feet if you left the engine in the operating position for the "official measurement."
I just measured the distance from the transom to the tip of a propeller blade on my 25-inch-shaft E-TEC 225-HP: it's 47-inches. But I measured with the engine in the trailer-lock tilt position, which won't quite get the skeg completely out of the water. That's why the propeller blade tip was the farthest distance from the transom.

Fantastic and thank you for doing this, I really appreciate the effort. Looks like a 190 Montuak will be too long with the engine trimmed out of the water.

I'll spare you the details, but I'm on the board and I have to follow the rules exactly.jimh wrote:You could save about two-feet if you left the engine in the operating position for the "official measurement."
