I'm lucky enough to be looking at a 1995 19 Outrage II that came from freshwater with a 1994 Johnson 150 and a 2018 Continental trailer.

Q1: on a 1995 19 OUTRAGE II is there any particular [fault or defect] I should be looking for—besides the normal [faults and defects due to age common to all boats]?

Q2: what four-stroke-power-cycle outboard engine is the go-to engine for a 1995 19 OUTRAGE II?

ASIDE
I am boat-savvy as I've brought a few boats back to life, ranging from a 16-foot Palm Beach (bare hull) to a 3850 Cruisers Yachts aft cabin (with blown 454). Both were free and we all know what that means. I mention my experience as I don't need the basics on buying a used boat.

I'm very familiar with the Johnson engines of this [c.1995] era.

In any c.1995 Boston Whaler boat, there are generally two major concerns;

• the below deck aluminum fuel tank integrity, and
• the existence of any significant retained water in the foam interior of the hull.

The 1995 epoch is an interesting time for Boston Whaler. The company was abandoning its previous hull designs. The year 1995 was one of two years when Meridian Sports owned the company. They bought Whaler from Reebok, and they were about to sell it to Brunswick, which has remained the owner since 1996.

However, a 1995 19 OUTRAGE II would have been a classic Bob Dougherty designed hull. The specifications are listed in the REFERENCE article at

The maximum power rating for the 1995 19 OUTRAGE II was 170-HP. The best current four-stroke-power-cycle engine in that horsepower range would be the one with the least weight.

If you are familiar with a c.1994 Johnson 150 you know it is a very good example of the classic carburetor V6 two-stroke-power-cycle outboard engine. If this engine is in good condition and runs as it should run, it will be a good fit on the 19 OUTRAGE II. That 60-degree V6 is a great design. It was one of best engines—if not the best engine—OMC ever made.

If you use a modern two-cycle full-synthetic oil the smoke in the exhaust will be minimal. Other than really bad fuel economy at idle speeds, the MPG when you are on plane won’t be horrible.

The cost to buy a new 150 to 175-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engine could pay for a lot of gasoline purchases with the old engine. Unless you are going to put hundreds and hundreds of hours on the engine every year, to recoup the expense of a new engine by “saving” on fuel used will take a very long time.
