[Moderator's note: this thread is moved to the MARKETPLACE forum; although the particular model of this boat was never explicitly indicated, in the model year 1977 the boat was likely a 17-foot hull in the MONTAUK family. All references to year have been changed to four-digits.]
REQUEST for APPRAISAL and ASKING PRICE for a 1977 MONTAUK [17] located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Please suggest a reasonable initial asking price for my 1977 MONTAUK 17. For the last 35-years I have been the second owner of this boat, and I have records of all the maintenance and care the boat has received during that time.
An unusual feature is the forward or casting platform. I believe this was a factory option, but I've never heard of another Montauk with one. The raised forward platform provides two fish boxes that easily fit Salmon that weigh 20-lbs, and also creates below-deck storage [that could be used for an] auxiliary fuel tank [or other gear].
[No photographs were originally included, and readers were to visit another website in order to see more photographs. The illustration below has been added to the post]
For a 50-year-old boat, the hull fiberglass and gel coat are in very nice shape.
The boat has a 70-HP main engine and an 8-HP auxiliary engine, both legacy two-stroke-power-cycle [carburetor] engines. The engine condition is "good", and they have not been operated since professional maintenance.
The electronics are older but were quality models from Icom, Furuno, and Garmin. The radio antenna is a GALAXY model and is new.
Under the reversible pilot seat is a 24-gallon on-deck fuel tank.
The boat battery is new.
The included tilt-trailer condition is "great". Its tires are new.
Included in the offer are a boat cover and a Bimini top with Sunbrella fabric and believed to be made by Wm. J. Mills & Co.
Also included are down riggers and other gear for angling for Salmon.
APPRAISAL and ASKING PRICE: 1977 MONTAUK [17]
Re: APPRAISAL and ASKING PRICE: 1977 MONTAUK [17]
Assessing the boat's selling price would be easier if you gave more details about all major elements of the package, such as
Working in your favor are the location and time of year. Really nice older Boston Whaler boats in California should command very strong prices and particularly in the Summer boating season.
Once you provide more particulars, a good estimate of selling price could be created by using the AI agent at GROK.COM. That resource has been a very interesting source of data about selling prices for comparable boats, and it should give you useful advice.

Unique Bow Casting Platform
The bow casting platform on your 1977 MONTAUK 17 is probably a rare example of that option, if indeed it was a factory option. Whether it adds value or not will depend on the buyer's opinion of the platform. Some buyers might see it as a wonderfully useful and desirable option, while others might see it as a detraction from the hull value. The same for all the specialized angling gear for the salmon species. Not every buyer will be a salmon angler, and even avid anglers for other species may not see the gear you are bundling with the boat as added value. This brings up another question:
Q1: is the bow casting platform removable without much alteration to the hull?
- the manufacturer, model, and production year of the two engines;
- the particulars of the electronics such as make and model; and
- the manufacturer of the trailer and its production year.
