Appraisal: 1978 MONTAUK

Give me an appraisal for my 1978 Montauk with a 2010 Mercury OptiMax 90-HP enigne. The engine runs perfectly and has 253 hours of run time.

The 1987 MONTAUK boat needs cosmetic work.

Without knowing location, I appraise the boat selling for $6,000 to $8,000.

In California the boat could sell for a bit higher price, and in Florida sell for a bit less.

This 1978 MONTAUK is missing a lot of normal equipment. There are no bow railings. The cushions are not original or of equal quality. The console railing seems to be modified.

I am somewhat amazed that Mercury ever made a 90-HP Optimax. Are you certain the engine is a two-stroke-power-cycle direct injection using the OptiMax system?

How many cylinders is the engine? The cowling looks like an old three-cylinder standard two-stroke-power-cycle Mercury engine.

I think Phil's appraisal is probably a good estimate.

Is there a trailer that is included?

Is that some sort of ‘shelf’ on top of the console and is that a navigation lamp on it?

Also, what are those markings on the deck aft of the fuel tanks?

The boat is used at the end of Long Island. We have owned it since 1993. Back then, it had a 88spl on it. I would NOT say it is original. And it has been used heavily. We replaced the engine in 2010 with the 90 optimax. It is a three cylinder. It runs perfectly with no alarms and has been serviced by a Mercury dealer since we bought it. I used the boat this past weekend and probably drove it over 20 miles. The boat would be a great work boat for some one. I am not sure anyone would want to try and restore it.

The “shelf” on top of the console held a whip for a vhf. It also had/has a bracket for a fish finder. The bracket was removable(with a push of a button) so the fish finder could be removed to avoid theft. Yes there is a navigation light up there. It is fair to say that none of the electronics work—(no lights, No vhf, no fish finder. The bilge pump works perfectly. The smart gauge is cloudy so you can’t read the LCD. But the analog part is fine.

The brown markings are some rust stains.

Yes, I have a 1999 bunk trailer for it. I would say it is is in fair condition.
