DAUNTLESS 15 Engine Shift Cable Length

Postby mnguyen82 » Tue Jul 29, 2025 10:40 pm

Q1: what is the correct length for the engine remote control SHIFT cable on a [unspecified model year] DAUNTLESS 15?

To shift the 2001 SUZUKI DF70 engine on my DAUNTLESS 15 is really hard.

A good test to perform before buying a new remote control cable would be to disconnect the shift lever cable at the engine from the engine lever that actually operates the gear shift mechanism. Then compare the effort needed to operate the remote controls with the engine disconnected to the effort needed when the engine is connected.

This test should determine if the higher-than-expected force needed to move the remote shift control level is due to binding in the cable itself or possibly even binding in the remote control mechanism itself. or if due to some binding in the engine shift mechanism itself itself.

Typically on an outboard engine the FWD-N-REV transmission is a very basic design, and without the engine drive shaft turning at low speed, shifting can be very difficult.

Also, typically the shift action needs to done with a rapid movement, as attempting to shift gears with slow movement of the remote shift lever usually causes the gears to have interference and delay in completing the shift.
