Any failure of the hull laminate at the transom which has allowed seawater of freshwater to enter the transom area is a serious concern. The transom of a c.1979 MONTAUK 17 contains embedded wood reinforcement, typically in the form of marine plywood. When exposed to water, particularly freshwater, there is a risk of rot forming in the plywood. Even without rot, if the plywood is saturated with water its strength is lost.

The first step in a proper repair is to assess the condition of the embedded wood in the transom and the resistance of the transom to bending or deformation from the forces exerted on it by the outboard engine. A simple test for can be done when the boat is on the trailer and by using the outboard engine as a lever. Hold the engine by the keg and exert force upward or downward. Observe the transom for any indication of yielding or flexing. Report your findings and more advice can be offered.

Currently the engine is removed, the boat is upside-down on a trailer, with repairs done to the bottom of the transom.

Q1: How can I test the transom in it's current state? I would rather be safe than sorry so I would assume that the transom needs to be re-inforced
