1988 Outrage 18 Room Under Cockpit Deck

I am buying a 1988 OUTRAGE 18. I plan to install a one-piece live well and leaning post seat combination, and I am looking at these two models:

I want to [add two hoses of unspecified diameter from the livewell] below the deck to connect to a transom through-hull inlet fitting [below the water line] and a discharge through-hull outlet fitting anywhere reasonably above the waterline.

Q1: Is there enough room between the deck plate and fuel tank to run more hoses?

Q2: is there enough room to fit a live well pump and shutoff valve in the bilge?

The OUTRAGE 18 hull has no bilge. The space between the hull molded part and the hull liner (that forms the cockpit deck) is entirely filled with foam. The is no access and no room.

The space below the aft cockpit deck has a molded depression called the fuel tank cavity. The internal, Integral, below-deck welded aluminum fuel tank sits in this cavity.

This cavity is covered by a removable laminated plywood-reinforced deck section.

There are several circular pry-out deck access plate in the fuel tank covering deck.

Remove any or all of the circular pry-out deck access plates to see how much clearance remains between the top of the fuel tank and the underside of the plywood that is laminated to and reinforces the molded removable deck.

Usually the fuel filling hose is about 2-inch OD, and it fits between the tank top and deck underside.

The fuel supply hoses for the outboard engine are about 1-inch OD and they fit. However they often pass through a hole or holes drilled though a molded part of the liner that creates a bulkhead for the tank cavity above the tank top. To add two more hoses you may have to completely remove the fuel tank cover to get access to drill more holes. The holes MUST be at the very top edge of that bulkhead because to the outboard edge is a rigging channel and drain channel thar can have water in it. You NEVER want to create a way for water to get into the fuel tank cavity.

Once you get the boat and remove the access plates you will be able to understand what I just described in narrative form.

You fail to describe the diameter of the hoses you will add, and so to know if they will fit between the tank top and the deck cover underside is difficult to predict.

Thank you Jim. Is there any space near the transom below the deck to fit a livewell pump or thru hull? Does the rigging cavity have any space where it comes up through the deck? Sorry for all of the questions but I won’t have possession of the boat for a few weeks and need to figure out if this plan is feasible before shelling out a few thousand for a livewell.

Read this two-part article. There are many illustrations that will help you understand better. It shows a 22-foot hull, not an 18-footer.

Exactly what is under a 1988 OUTRAGE 18 remains to be discovered by both of us.


There may already be a live well compartment aft of the fuel tan compartment. I don’t remember exactly what is there. But I think there isn’t a live well compartment because there just was no room; the fuel tank takes up all the space.
