Swivel Rod Holder in Gunwale of OUTRAGE 22

Postby Redline » Sat Aug 20, 2016 12:10 pm

Looking for advice from someone with experience with reinforcing a gunwale mounted swivel rod holder on an early 1990 OUTRAGE 22. Give me an opinion, a suggestion, or guidance--Redline

Can you describe a swivel rod holder in more detail? I looked up that term on GOOGLE IMAGES and saw all sorts of configurations of rod holders.

Apologies-
Swivel rod holders, unlike typical rod holders found on small boats, allow a rod and reel setup to move 360 degrees. This means there is no need to ever remove the rod and reel setup from the swivel rod holder. The angler fights the fish by using the boat, instead of his or her body.

Ideally the swivel rod holder would be mounted on the bow of the boat. Unfortunately, installing the swivel rod holder on the bow is not practical for many smaller vessels. Second best would be at the corner of the stern. Primarily designed to be used with bent butt tackle, the rod holders unique swivel base allows the rod butt to rotate in the rod holder when side pressure is applied to the tip of the rod. This is an indispensable tool, especially important in Giant Blue Fin Tuna fishing, where reel drags in the neighborhood of 60 pounds are frequently used and can result in tremendous forces being applied to the rod holder pin. Not only does this make sheared rod holder pins a thing of the past but, more importantly, it allows the tip of the rod to follow the fish. This reduces the possibility of line fraying and enhanced drag as the line streams sideways out of the roller tip instead of over the roller. The rod is also more easily removed from the holder since it is not locked on a rigid pin. The swivel base holder functions as a standard rod holder when used with straight butt rods. Straight butt rods can be manually rotated so that the line remains on the tip’s roller. The amount of torque required to rotate the swivel is set by adjusting the pressure on two nylon drag washers with a ½ inch brass lock nut at the bottom of the rod holder.

I think we also need to know what the gunwales are made of as well as if you're going to be pulling on giant tuna with 130 lb class tackle. I doubt if the teak gunwales on my 1987 would handle the stress, given that the gunwales were only held down with about 8 screws.

Agree totally- trying to figure out a way to reinforce the gunwale somehow.... Aluminum plate underneath etc...
