Through-hull Drain Outlet Shroud

Postby Menner » Mon Mar 28, 2016 3:39 pm

Hi all. I just signed up. I have been lurking around. I have a 1979 Outrage 20. I just pulled the [fuel] tank and had a new 35-gallon [fuel tank] made to replace the monster that was in there. [The original tank] had a few holes in it.

I am also going to replace a drain tube. I got a new tube without a problem. But the shroud (that is in front of the tube on the bottom of the hull and there I assume to direct water away from the opening} is eaten up and needs replacing. I can not find anything like it anywhere. I don't know if shroud is the proper name.

My local Boston Whaler dealer is no help because of the age [of my boat]. They say they can't look anything up prior to 1996.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks--Tony

The CLAMSHELL VENT that partially covers the outlet of the through-hull drain is mentioned in the answer to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION #12, "How Are Drain Tubes Replaced?" Also, the FAQ provides a link to the PERKO webpage that shows a clamshell vent. See

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q12

http://www.perko.com/catalog/ventilator ... entilator/

Boston Whaler through-hull drains on the classic era hulls are typically protected by these clamshell vents which have been adapted to be used as a partial cover for the drain outlet. A standard, off-the-shelf clamshell vent is used, but typically two extra holes are drilled into the vent to create a total of five holes for the threaded mounting fasteners.

The typical replacement is a PERKO chrome over brass clamshell vent, and available at just about every marine store.

The FAQ also explains the purpose:

[The partial cover over the drain outlet] creates a venturi effect when underway which improves draining and also protects the leading edge of the drain from being blasted with high-speed water.

I encourage reading all the answers in the FAQ. The answers are generally well researched. Do not confuse their concise style for lack of information content.

I think you must have a 1979 OUTRAGE V-20. See the REFERENCE section article on this model to confirm this is your boat:

Thanks. Exactly what I needed. Yes, it is indeed a V-20. I have owned it since 1984--Tony
